White House walks back Obama's Clinton email comments
By Laura Koran, CNN
Updated 6:05 PM ET, Tue October 13, 2015 | Video Source: CNN
Story highlights
Obama said on "60 Minutes" that he didn't think Clinton's personal email server "posed a national security problem"
But White House press secretary Josh Earnest clarified that Obama's statement was made only "based on what we publicly know now"
Washington (CNN)The White House on Tuesday backtracked on President Barack Obama's blanket assertion earlier this week that Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state didn't pose a national security threat.
Asked outright in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes," Obama said, "I don't think it posed a national security problem."
But asked how the President was able to make such a definitive statement even as the FBI is looking into the server's security, White House press secretary Josh Earnest clarified that Obama's statement was made "based on what we publicly know now."
"The President was making an observation about what we know so far, which is that Secretary Clinton herself has turned over a bunch of email to the State Department, and the review of that email has garnered some differing assessments about what's included in there," Earnest said.
The President's comment was "certainly was not an attempt, in any way, to undermine the importance or independence of the ongoing FBI investigation," Earnest said, stressing that Obama "has a healthy respect for the kinds of independent investigations that are conducted by inspectors general and, where necessary, by the FBI."
The Justice Department is looking into how the information on Clinton's server was handled, and Clinton's aides have turned the server over to the FBI as part of that probe.

Hillary Clinton took a veiled shot at Bernie Sanderss self-proclaimed democratic socialism early in the debate Tuesday night, Ben Jacobs writes:
After Sanders was asked about whether a socialist could be elected president, Clinton jumped in to go after Sanders. She said We are not Denmark and saying that the United States would make a grave mistake if it abandoned capitalism.
Sanders then pushed back noting his support for small and medium sized businesses.
Clinton was the second frontrunner to attack Sanderss ideology in the past days. In an interview with the Guardian on Monday, Donald Trump said the Vermont senator is an admitted socialist. Some people think hes even worse than that. Hes the next step.

Gun control takes center stage
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton went head to head on gun control issues. When asked directly if she felt Bernie Sanders was tough enough on guns, Clinton did not mince words, "No. Not at all."
"This has gone on too long, and it's time that the entire country stood up against the NRA," Clinton continued.

Question for all the candidates: Whats the biggest national security threat?
Chafee: missed it (us, not him)
OMalley: nuclear Iran, climate change
Clinton: continued threat from spread of nuclear weapons, nuclear material
Sanders: the global crisis of climate change
Webb: relations with China, cyber warfare and the situation in the Middle East.

Bernie, on Hillarys email, says this may not be great politics but: enough of the emails lets talk about the real issues facing America.
And that why we Feel the Bern!
Google plus
4m ago02:51
Chafee says the emails are fair game, because theres an issue of American credibility there and I think we need somebody who has the best ethical standards to be our next president.
Cooper: Secretary Clinton, do you want to respond?
Clinton: No, with a big smile.
More big applause.
And that appears to be it about the email?
6m ago02:49
Sanders to Clinton: 'the American public is sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails'
Let me say something that may not be great politics. But I think that the secretary is right. And that is that the American public is sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails.
Wild applause. Standing ovation.

Hari Ziyad
From writer and RaceBaitR editor-in-chief Hari Ziyad:
Martin OMalley and Bernie Sanders seem to have learned from the disruptions to which they fell victim earlier this year. On race, they are saying all the right words now.
But Hillary Clinton moved past words and into specifics. And then, activists have been saying over and over again that we cannot continue to talk about income inequality without a racial lens. Sanders had the perfect set-up to address their concerns on race, but he faltered.

Legal weed gets boost in debate
While Jeb Bush had a light-hearted GOP moment surrounding marijuana, the two leading Democratic candidates used a question about legalizing marijuana to take a stand on criminal justice reform.
Bernie Sanders said he would support legalization of recreational marijuana, saying, "I've seen too many lives ruined" by harsh sentences for marijuana usage. "We are giving jail sentences to young people are smoking marijuana... We need to rethink our criminal justice system."
Clinton piggybacked on Sanders' stance on criminal justice, even as she herself refused to say whether or not she would support recreational marijuana. As she's said before, she sees states like Colorado and Washington as a chance to learn more: "We have an opportunity through states to learn a lot more than we know today." Building on that, she added, "I do support the use of medicinal marijuana... I agree completely with the idea we have to stop imprisoning people who use marijuana."
