"How do you know that?"

We've already heard from various Republicans who are swearing Mitt Romney paid every red cent he owed, and that there's nothing in his taxes that would raise an eyebrow.

There's only one follow-up to that kind of testimony: "How do you know that?". The only possible answer is "because Mitt said so", and that sounds foolish no matter who says it.

Even Romney himself has been at once defending his returns and simultaneously claiming he "hasn't really looked at them". Perhaps the same question can apply when Mitt says his taxes are on the level.

It is such a simple and obvious follow up question. Why doesn't every journalist just ask this question when Mitt supporters say he paid his income taxes correctly?
