As Florida primary fight turns personal, Republican insiders fear for party unity

TAMPA, Fla. Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney may be on a path toward mutually assured destruction, and both are refusing to unilaterally disarm.
Gone from the race in Florida are the long-winded outlines of their plans to create jobs, cut the national debt and pull homeowners out of foreclosure. Gone are the policy-based condemnations of who is too moderate or whose tax plan too unrealistic.
Theyve been replaced by attacks that would make a kindergarten teacher call a foul: Gingrich says Romney is a liar; Romney says Gingrich is a failure.
Republican insiders worry its not just bad for party unity, but could sink the GOPs electoral chances far beyond the presidential race.
This has got to stop, said Al Cardenas, the former chairman of the Republican Party of Florida and head of the American Conservative Union. Either because someone very soon becomes the de facto nominee or because they agree to a truce on personal issues.

(5,213 posts)Rightwing propaganda begun under Reagan will not be able to continue without a united front by the Rethuglicans. Unless, of course, Obama continues his bipartisanship fucking bullshit which rescued the GOP from oblivion in 2008.

When they will be asked to drink the kool-aid.
To chants piped in over the stereo intercom system:
"Mitt! Mitt! Mitt!
Mitt's the One!"
Paul said the other day that he won't drop out of the race until it is mathematically impossible for him to become the nominee.
Which means he will drop out next Wednesday.

(28,158 posts)They realize this could be worse than just the possibility of losing the presidential election. It could mean losing many down ticket races if they cannot get their voters motivated to get out and vote.
As it sits now the only ones motivated to vote Obama out are their "very regular" voters.
