Sanders Statement on Speaker Boehner's Resignation

Friday, September 25, 2015

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement today after Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced he will resign at the end of October:

“It appears that even a very conservative speaker like John Boehner is unable to control the extreme right-wing drift of Republicans in the House. This is a party whose ideology is way out of touch with the American people. Without Boehner, it may get even worse.”

I thought maybe he was fearing for his mortal soul for all of the crooked, evil, mean, heartless shite he has done and the Pope brought it all home to him. Too bad, it would be better for him if that had been the reason!

the anti poor, anti-the-most-vulnerable members of society, which the Pope has lambasted powerful Catholics for, policies due to the Koch Bros Tea Party who make Boehner look like a liberal.

But that's wishful thinking, that he might have had a divine intervention and was conscience stricken about all the anti-Christian policies he supported throughout his career.

It's more likely that he hopes that without him to push around the extremists will destroy each other or at least people will get a good unfiltered look at what they have supported.

Whatever the reason I can't say I blame him. I even felt a bit sorry for him as he must have had pangs of conscience as he listened to the pope talk about the very issues he has opposed all of his life. That has to be painful.

... That is what first came to mind. I read the msnbc article where near the end of the page, it says that Pope Francis had met with Boehner the day before the joint session of Congress speech. The Pope had told Boehner, "to pray for me".

I remarked to a few of my relatives (north american baptists) that the bible tells us to pray for our enemies, to ask Jesus to give them understanding...

Perhaps a nasty inside joke I played there...

You really hit a good point there about praying for our enemies. One of the problems so many Evangelicals make today. Instead they hate.

Follow Jesus words. They make sense whether you are a believer or not.
Do unto others. It comes back to you.

And, besides,it makes them angrier than anything you can do. Joke there, folks. Do not take that last part seriously.

He knows that shutting the gov down over Planned Parenthood would be a disaster for the country and for his party (such as the GOP is). The only way he could prevent a shut down is to get Pelosi and the Dems to help him (and our country). That would then be a clarion call for the wingnuts to call for a motion to vacate the Speaker's chair. Essentially, he would probably lose his Speakership anyway. So take one for the team, fall on his sword, etc. But go out doing a good dead for his country and for the institution. The irony is that a CR would only get us to the end of December. And then bang! The wingnuts are back again with some faux outrage to shut the gov down. That's how sad all this is. Big sacrifices for itty-bitty gains.

I think we all have to take a deep breath and let the wingnuts demonstrate over and over again how much they hate everyone, who doesn't look exactly like what they see in the mirror. Eventually, hopefully the 2016 election, will turn a bunch of them out the door.

If the extreme right-wing Tea Baggers get control, they could self destruct only after causing serious damage. I look for the polarization to intensify. Perhaps this is the reason behind Pope Francis emphasis on the need for unity and dedication to the common good. Did he have prior knowledge that Boehner was going to resign do to the obstructionism of the extremists who are taking control of the Republican Party? I think that there is a lot to fear when even Boehner, who is hardly a friend of liberal causes, abandons a sinking ship like rats in fear of drowning. It is evident that he well knows that there is no hope of compromise with these ideologues. We are not in for pleasant times.

It's the way all Democrats should be framing issues like this. Call Republicans what they are, conservative and extreme right wing. The media has convinced Americans that people like Bohner are moderates and the Tea Party conservative. It allows the Republicans to call Democrats like Obama and Hillary left wing when they are not in the least.

Democrats can span the same spectrum as Repuglicans. Some are moderates, some reactionary, most mercenary, most entitled, some intelligent and some really/really stupid.

Of course there are the leftists, progressive liberals, centrists, RWNJ, teapottiers. What would ET think if s/he came to talk to the "Leader"?

B.O. has done a very good job of trying to thread this needle altho the camel was too big. I don't agree with his Wall Street leanings but he has done a great job against great odds on some social and foreign/political programs.

Chris Hedges American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America should be required reading. Shame, shame on our media for not covering this story. Several years ago when Jack Cafferty still had a few minutes on the Blizter show, he did a segment on the Dominionists & he was alarmed. He stated he had never heard of them & how scary they were. Viewers wrote in parroting what he said. Do you think CNN ever did a special on it?

These are some scary fuckers & the media is not just giving them a voice, they are amplifying it. They don't have a clue how crazy & dangerous these zealots are.
