Sierra Club Statement on Hillary Clinton’s Energy Proposals

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released a new energy plan as part of her campaign for the Democratic Nomination for President.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“We applaud Secretary Clinton for laying out a bold energy plan that rightly identifies the expansion of our clean energy economy as a top priority. From updating our energy grid for renewable capacity to getting dangerous, unsafe crude oil trains off the rails, the initiatives she lays out will go a long way toward keeping our air and water clean and our families safe. While we know that getting off of dangerous fuel sources like oil, gas, coal, and nuclear must be our goal, this plan is a great step forward that will create jobs and help tackle the climate crisis.”

I am proud of what Pres Obama is doing to make our environment more livable and his addressing climate change. Hillary's plan would enhance his efforts.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks during a community forum on healthcare, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, at Moulton Elementary School in Des Moines, Iowa. Clinton broke her longstanding silence over the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, telling voters at a campaign stop in Iowa on Tuesday that she opposes the project assailed by

WASHINGTON - A campaign promise by Hillary Clinton rippled across the border into Canada's federal election on Wednesday, with parties responding to her call for a broad, North American climate-change plan.

She released a policy paper that proposed climate negotiations among Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, one day after she announced her opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline.

The position paper from the presidential contender added a new wrinkle to a pipeline issue that has already inserted itself in two national elections — the current Canadian one and the 2016 U.S. presidential race.

Clinton wants to follow her opposition to Keystone with a broader program that includes immediately launching talks toward a North American Climate Compact.

It would be a more aggressive plan than an existing one among the three countries, a continental working group created this year that proposes infrastructure upgrades but does not enforce emissions reductions.

"Building a clean, secure, and affordable North American energy future is bigger than Keystone XL or any other single project. That's what I will focus on as president," said the Clinton paper.

"As president, I will immediately launch negotiations with Canada and Mexico to forge a North American Climate Compact that sets strong national targets to cut carbon pollution, so all three countries demonstrate a commitment to climate action; (and) provides accountability measures, so each country has confidence that the others are living up to their end of the bargain."

Utah shouldn't be allowed to even uncover those deposits.

I always want these things to go farther than anyone but Bernie thinks they can in the beginning, but if she keeps focusing on presenting solutions to our problems, she's going to keep me happy.

plan is a good thing. They like Bernie, too, of course. Since the Republicans would rape the environment, it's a no-brainer that the Sierra Club endorses the Democratic candidate. The point is that they like Hillary Clinton's plan, too.

I don't see the problem, really.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders announced he would officially begin his campaign for President of the United States.

The Sierra Club has not yet begun any endorsement process for the 2016 Presidential election.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

"With Senator Sanders entering the Democratic primary, Americans can be sure that this election will include a robust and healthy discussion of fundamentally important challenges like tackling the climate crisis, getting big corporate money out of politics, and investing to grow our clean energy economy. On behalf of the Sierra Club’s 2.4 million members and supporters, we welcome Senator Sanders to the 2016 race and look forward to the debate on these issues in the months to come.”
