Mitt Romney has five obvious things on his resume that might count in his favor as someone who could be a good president. Let's look at them.
2. He became a multimillionaire by running a private equity firm. But he just spent two weeks trying to convince us that he left that firm four years earlier than he actually did because he doesn't want to be associated with the firm's activities.
3. He ran the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. But after his trip to the London Olympics, the last thing Mitt will want is for anyone to mention the words "Romney" and "Olympics" in the same paragraph.
4. He was the governor of Massachusetts. But he renounced his biggest accomplishment as governor, and he didn't bother to run for a second term because he would have been soundly defeated.
5. He's an upright and moral family man. But he won't let us see his taxes or examine his secret foreign bank accounts, and he just threw his wife and her dressage horse under the bus on international television in return for what he perceived to be some kind of short-term political gain.
So, I ask you ladies and gentlemen, what is left?
That's he an Anglo-Saxon? Those people hate his guts.

(10,103 posts)He's also a member of the moneyed set, and they're trying to get him elected because he's one of them. The fact that he's a controlling, insular, self-absorbed waste of money and resources doesn't mean a damn thing.

(50,254 posts)It's not racist to point out that "white skin privilege" still exists in this country. The passage of voter suppression bills all over the country and the way Arizona treats anybody that even "looks Mexican" are proof of that.

(57,150 posts)IS bringing race into the equation, which Mitt's campaign did with the "Anglo-Saxon value" cover. It was racist and intentionally so. Voting Romney as an ABO choice is racist decision. I am sick and tired of the Party of Lincoln constantly race baiting regardless of however gently and politely they couch it.
babylonsister
(171,079 posts)and the rest of what he stands for? They don't give a crap. I live with a few of these people, and it astounds me. For so many, it is about race even if they try to couch it in party differences. The thing with the roomies is, they don't have a grasp of any facts to enforce the fact that they claim they're republicans, it's all about the color of the person they are voting against. The stupid hurts.
marble falls
(57,150 posts)say anything other than "Obamacare" as a reason for it while being unable to state even one factual feature of the healthcare initiative they don't like, and knowing that racism is wrong will not even mention it. They think being racist is being "Conservative" and being "Conservative" is being "Republican". Most of these folks (including my in-laws) have not had a single bad effect from the economy or have even benefited from it and almost all of them are on one "Socialist" program or another they would never give up all the while wanting no others on it. I think we should be means testing everyone on SSI. Including my folks who retired at 50 and have for the last 35 years spent at least 200 days a year on cruises or out of the country. SSI was never meant to subsidize their travel. But they want everybody else to work until we're seventy and they want SSI privatized, to be handled by the same guys who tanked the economy and require bailing out. Don't get me started. BTW I really enjoy your posts and crib them for another site.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,426 posts)that he "survived" the primaries. He didn't "win" them. He just outlasted (and outspent) his opponents, none of whom had the "appeal" and/or "gravitas" to win the GOP primary with an incredibly (not) daunting field of candidates.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)But the media did have fun with the "not-Romney" meme. They would ask "which of the "not-Romney" candidates would have a chance to win this state or that state.
At some point, the media should start to play with that again. Draw it out.
We should start calling Romney the "not-Obama" candidate. That's all he is.

(10,893 posts)the far-right vote was split between Cain, Perry, Paul, Bachmann, Santorum, and Gingrich, making Mitt Robme the default nominee. There was never a clear-cut anti-Robme nominee to give him a run for his money (no pun intended).

^snip^
One of the main things Mitt Romney and his campaign want you to know is that Romney "saved" the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. In fact, Romney's returning to Utah tomorrow to congratulate himself on the 10th anniversary of those winter games.
But the story of Romney's supposed Olympic triumph isn't as simple as he wants you to believe. Rather, his success as president of the 2002 winter games was due to the unprecedented amount of federal money he procured to organize the most expensive Olympics in American history. And coming from a candidate who's spent his campaign railing against federal spending and earmarks, it's another breathtaking example of Romney's hypocrisy.
The Salt Lake games got more taxpayer dollars than all of the previous U.S.-hosted Olympics combined: a whopping $1.3 billion. For comparison, the 1984 games in L.A. received $75 million and the 1996 games in Atlanta received $609 million. It's clear that the real hero of the 2002 games was the American taxpayer.
Romney's campaign is already pushing back by saying that the extra money was necessary for security. But our money went to much more than security, including $30 million for parking lots, $2 million for sewer systems, and $33,000 for an Olympic horse adoption program.

(13,141 posts)It's a juicy subject and they're probably working on doing it
well.
It's a beautiful point to make repeatedly, that Romney's
a total flipflopper and not trustworthy; how many millions
he has bilked from the federal government, with video proof...
and by the way
where are those tax returns?
And will there be repeated mashups of his primary competitors'
talking about him and how bad he is for America?
it's going to be an entertaining next few months!!!

And he didn't have any problem with that.when Bain outsourced and offshored jobs, when it shorted pension funds, he took a hefty share of the money those actions diverted into Bain's accounts.
No matter what he says his hands aren't clean.

(17,656 posts). . . they took to Romney.
From a conservative's point of view, it just doesn't make sense.
She didn't have an "elitist" education. Shucks, she barely got a college degree as it was.
She didn't diss the Olympics at all in 2008. Instead, she was "proud as heck" of the athletes that participated in the Olympics.
She didn't act like she had never been the Governor of a state. My gosh, she talked about it all of the time.
She didn't have secret bank accounts or millions of dollars stashed in banks overseas. Golly, she barely had enough money as it was that she even kept the clothes that the campaign bought for her.
She hardly ever discussed what she did before she was a Governor. Shoot, she never even mentioned working on a committee that was involved with the oil industry.
And yet, some conservatives said that she wasn't qualified to be on the GOP ticket!
Man, after George W. Bush acted like he was the President for 8 years, that was a hard one to have to swallow.

Everything about me is presidential. You may not even know why, but youve all thought it, and thats no accident. Ive been designed precisely for this moment. Im a hybrid of every classic American presidential hairstyle since the 1930s. Roosevelts fatherly gray temples. Kennedys insouciant bouffant. Reagans lethal, revolutionary amalgam of feathering and pomade.

(7,917 posts)to succeed in stealing the vote once again. At least 1/2 the point of Romney as a candidate is the PLAUSIBILITY of a majority voting for him on the day (in just the right states), and that just enough voters would appear to chose not to re-elect Obama.
WE know that Romney is NOT presidential material. That truth does not persuade those who imagine the president and government are dangerously un-American. In the current media climate the GOP could run almost anyone who simulates legitimacy to the so-called swing voter. As long as "they" can pump in cash at 4 to 6 times the rate of democratic candidates they have an edge where perception matters.
