Perhaps not so much.

(12,958 posts)About 1/4 of the audience either cheered or politely clapped while 3/4 looked horrified.
Those who came specifically to support Sanders were grouped together in the front.

(19,460 posts)I can't believe he started that speech throwing women under the bus.
restorefreedom
(12,655 posts)what do you mean by thowing women under the bus?
he was clear that he was prochoice. it was one of the first things he said.
are we talking about the same speech?

(5,902 posts)"I do understand and I do believe that it is improper for the United States government to tell every women in this country the very painful and difficult choice she has to make on that issue," Sanders said.

Please explain.

(19,460 posts)Sander's "agree to disagree" nonsense only serves to legitimize Liberty and everything it stands for. Liberty stands for anti-choice, anti-gay rights, anti-interracial dating and a whole host of other anti-whatevers. You may see this differently.

(57,349 posts)That's why so many people - including those who aren't Bernie supporters - were so impressed by his speech.
The spin being put on it by Brock doesn't change the facts.
restorefreedom
(12,655 posts)what did you expect him to do? try and browbeat them into agreeing with him? stand there and call them losers like trump?
that is the gop way, not the progressive way. we present the facts with passion and hope people will understand
at least he went, which no other dem running can say...

(12,655 posts)gay rights is a fringe issue for people who would never vote dem anyway, plus marriage equality is decided law.
abortion is long time decided law, and most people support choice in some fashion. again, those who don't are not going to be voting dem.
and the president is leaving, and sane people get that racism is vile and should not be tolerated. the few white supremacists that are political would not vote dem anyway.
this is a non issue

(7,804 posts)Yes.
Not as sparkly as they used to be, I'm afraid.
I was reading and contributing obsessively to CIF during the Scottish Independence Referendum. I was at first taken aback by the highly peculiar tone they were taking, which was consistent and and-independence. I spotted the spin patterns fairly quickly and, with a heavy heart, had to re-file that publication in my mind.
It used to be a newspaper. Now it's a tabloid for hand-wringers in Islington.
I'll try to be fair - they did let some of their lovable eccentrics support independence, but... their workforce knew the score.
Take it from me - they know exactly as much as they used to and, these days, say less of it.
Have you read the comments section under that article?

The fact is that what he said and how he said it is the absolute Gold Standard for political discourse in the United States, and that is why he's our best candidate.

He threw gays and women under the bus and gave his usual economic justice speach like he does to POC.
When you start cutting off pieces of your platform to appease the right you have no creditbility left.

(1,573 posts)that he expected that most of the students there disagreed with HIS position regarding abortion and gay marriage. Then he talked about things they COULD agree on.
Should his speech have been trying to convince them to become pro-choice and pro-gay marriage? What a waste of time that would have been, considering the audience.

(1,573 posts)...but based on everything I've read on the topic of the Liberty University speech, from all points of view, it was a resounding success. It gained him a great deal of respect, and even some "converts" among the students.
