2016 Postmortem

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is gaining fast on front-runner Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential race and has moved within single digits of her for the first time, a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll showed on Friday.
Clinton leads Sanders nationally among Democrats by eight percentage points, 39 percent to 31 percent, her smallest cushion since the nominating battle began for the November 2016 election. She led Sanders by 20 percentage points in the online poll a week ago.
Clinton's support among Democrats has steadily eroded for weeks amid questions about her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. Her support was at 45 percent one week ago.
Clinton apologized for the email practice earlier this week, but the controversy has helped knock her support among Democrats to its lowest level since Reuters/Ipsos began polling on the 2016 election almost three years ago.

(11,366 posts)I didn't see the CNN poll posted here from yesterday, but it also shows Sanders approaching single digits of Clinton nationally. In fact, it has Clinton at 37 percent and Sanders at 27 percent.

(19,537 posts)Looks like Hillary lead Obama around 47% - 22% at this point then. Hmm... I wonder if Bernie will surge even moreso than Obama did!

I layered the two graphs just out of curiosity, and realized the hillary/bernie one looks less dramatic because the vertical spread is squashed in the original compared to this (55 point spread with Bernie vs. 25 pt spread with Obama at the start of the years), and it encompassed a longer time frame. When I matched up the starts of the years and roughly tried to line up Sept (admittedly, not perfect - I just eyeballed it to get sense of it all), I got this:

(13,326 posts)different. Actually, both Hillary and Bernie are where Obama and Hillary were at this time last time. However, there is much more dynamics in the current situation, with promise of repeat.

(1,017 posts)so much for the slowdown in Sanders popularity . Interesting to see how little this poll has been discussed here on DU .

(19,326 posts)was how good Biden polls against GOP front-runners.
.. like Bernie didn't fucking exist.
I used to like her show, but she's apparently had to "fall in line"
or lose her job.

(19,326 posts)But whatever Joe eventually decides, he's NOT even A Freaking CANDIDATE now,
So why should I even spend 10-seconds on how Biden runs against GOP candidates,
in a GE he'll most likely never even be in? ... especially when there IS an actual declared
candidate in Dem Primary who's already beating Hillary in early primary states, but
who is flagrantly excluded from any mention on Rachael's "report on the Dem. Primary nooz"
today.
It was just sickening to watch. I had to turn it off.

(13,877 posts)It highlights...brings to attention...the flaws in her campaign. Thus the more lukewarm of her supporters will possibly think again and watch Bernie more, because...no offense to Joe, I like him...he doesn't have a chance in the world to get elected. Just to mix up the pot for which, I believe, will benefit Bernie.

(33,688 posts)She apparently learned nothing from her '08 run. Bernie keeps pounding away on the issues and she's trying to run like an incumbent. I predict Bernie will catch her and pass her by late November-early December.

(24,411 posts)I was thinking that he is gearing up for a run.
This is just my opinion, but I think he's the DNC/DLC back-up plan. They're waiting to see what happens with Hillary's campaign, and if it continues on the current downward trajectory, Joe will step in, if needed.
I don't think he's announced yet, because they're in wait-and-see mode.
I think that's what the Colbert appearance was about. Why else would he appear on that show? I've worked in public relations/media relations for many years. People like Joe Biden don't appear on a national talk show because they're bored. There's a specific purpose, message or goal that is behind that appearance.
Interesting choice of venues as well. Undoubtedly, whatever their goal is with Joe, they are targeting Progressives and young people.

(19,326 posts)is that she really loves her job, and saw how "Too much Bernie" got Bid Ed
axed from his show, and/or she got more explicit "directions" from TPTB at
Comcast.

(19,326 posts)Maybe Rachael and Chris Hayes are playing Bernie-tag, since I saw
Chris had Bernie on last night, and they had an amazing on-air frank
disussion about stuff, and it seemed Chris was lighting-up with The Bern.
That's how Rachael used to be early-on, clearly thrilled with Bernie.
It'll be interesting to see which msnbc anchors survive 2016 elections, and
which don't.

(2,427 posts)I think that may be his demise. I hope I am wrong too, I like me some Hayes.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there an upcoming Democratic debate?
I Googled earlier, and the soonest debate that I found, was in Summer '16.
Did I miss something? Thank you for any info.
