(70,242 posts)Laura Van Melle I really think that this country needs to put focus on drug addiction treatment. When the War on Drugs started on Richard Nixon, he did mention rehabilitation, so obviously, he wanted the government to help out with that. However, it went from both punishment and rehabilitation to being just punishment. We really need a president who can put more into rehabilitation so that punishment can be avoided.

Hillary Clinton We agree. A key pillar of Hillarys initiative is to prioritize treatment and rehabilitation over incarceration. 65% of people in prisons and jails are suffering from substance use disorders. Hillary is committed to pursuing alternatives to incarceration for people with low-level nonviolent drug offenses. And she also believes we need to make sure that people who are incarcerated are getting access to proper treatment - both in prison and upon release. Shes also committed to pursuing broader criminal justice reform and ending the era of mass incarceration. -Maya & Sara

Damon T Bethea Thank you for taking time to listen to voters on the trail and thoughtfully developing a plan that will help to address the challenges with substance abuse & recovery. Thank you!

(70,242 posts)Amy Smith I think a huge hurdle has been health care coverage for counseling and inpatient rehabilitation programs. As well as availability of counselors and inpatient programs. Does any of her plan focus on these issues?

Hillary Clinton Absolutely. Hillary Clinton has been fighting for affordable and inclusive health coverage for many years. One of the five goals of Hillarys plan is that every person who suffers from addiction to drugs or alcohol have access to the comprehensive treatment he or she needs, whether that be in-patient or out-patient, and whether that involves mental health counseling, medication assisted treatment, or access to peer coaches in the recovery community. She is calling upon every state to close their gaps in treatment. She will ensure that existing federal insurance parity laws are enforced and direct the government to re-evaluate Medicare and Medicaid payment practices to remove obstacles to reimbursement. -Maya & Sara

(796 posts)But from what I saw it was a good, substantive discussion. Although the spammers and usual haters were there, they didn't disrupt the Q and A. I guess they could only respond to the questions that the campaign posted so that seemed a good way to handle the disrupters.

(70,242 posts)If you did not see this post--Here is her plan. Disrupters are rude. This is a serious conversation.
Felix Woudenberg Can someone just throw in a link towards the specifics of the stated 'plan'? Otherwise it is kind of hard to give any feedback except for one-liners, personal anecdotes and shallow pre-assumptions.

Hillary Clintons Initiative to Combat Americas Deadly Epidemic of Drug and Alcohol Addiction
Drug and alcohol addiction is a national epidemic and our nation is failing to address it. Nearly 23 million Americans suffer from a substance use disorder, yet only about one in ten receive treatment. This is a problem that touches Americans everywhere, from our biggest cities to our smallest towns, and from our richest enclaves to our poorest neighborhoods. It is a problem that did not just appear overnight, but has worsened in recent years. And we cannot arrest and incarcerate our way out of it. We need a new approach to tackling this complex challenge. The costs to our nation of not doing so are huge: reduced productivity, overloaded health care and criminal justice systems, and hundreds of thousands of human lives lost.
Today, Hillary Clinton is making clear that this deadly epidemic of addiction must be addressed head-on and is proposing a bold proposal to do so. Her $10 billion Initiative to Combat Americas Deadly Epidemic of Drug and Alcohol Addiction sets forth ambitious goals to prevent and treat substance use disorders, and to support people in recovery. It provides multi-faceted federal policy leadership and substantial financial incentives to states to achieve those goals through cooperative partnerships.
Hillary Clintons Vision and Commitment
Prevention: Empower communities to implement preventive programming for adolescents about drug use and addiction. Clinton believes that we need to do far more as a nation to educate our youth, as well as their families, teachers, coaches, mentors and friends to intervene early in order to prevent drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. School-based programs that are developmentally appropriate, and community-wide peer mentoring and leadership programs, can be highly effective means of delaying or preventing the first use of alcohol or drugs. Clinton will help state and local leaders put in place effective, evidence-based, and locally-tailored programs to meet their needs.....................
