Romney's Strategy is His Only Strategy

Much like the necessity of defending Sarah Palin destroyed every minimum standard of truth and decency that remained in the Republican Party, Mitt Romney's utterly vacuous campaign is turning the nation's Republican governors into blathering idiots. I don't know what I'd say in their place, but that's sort of the point, What can you say? If you offer some advice like maybe Romney could release his tax returns and put this controversy to bed, you're forced to walk it back the next day. If you say that Romney should spell out his economic plans, you ignore that his economic plans poll so badly that the Democrats have decided that no one will believe them if they talk about them. If you suggest that Romney humanize himself by talking more about his personal life, you ignore that Romney is basically a straight-laced Clark Griswold who does weird things like strap a dog crate to the roof of his station wagon before he sets off on a lengthy vacation. If you tell him to defend his work at Bain Capital, you aren't taking account of the fact that he's had twenty years to try to do that as a candidate and has never succeeded. And you know in your heart that releasing his tax returns won't make the issue go away, but will destroy his candidacy in its crib.

One after another, the Republican governors assembled for their annual meeting in Virginia, told reporters that Romney needs to do this or that differently. But all of their advice was bad. Romney doesn't talk about his personal life because he isn't likable. He doesn't talk about Bain Capital because no one likes a vulture capitalist and it only invites his opposition to pile on. He doesn't talk about his economic plans because they're less popular than a case of herpes.

Romney's current strategy is the only strategy that makes any sense. Don't discuss anything except the president and the economy. Go 100% negative. Do everything you can to make the election about the incumbent and not about you. Never talk about yourself. Never talk about your plans, except in the most generalized platitudes. And hope a perfect storm hits at just the right time in November and you win because you're the only plausible alternative on the ballot.

Even if it's not working well enough to win, doing anything else will immediately backfire. So, stick to the strategy.

This is what happens when a party becomes insane and then nominates someone with an indefensible history, personality, and platform.

It doesn't take a lot of thought, which is good because he doesn't have the capacity for that.

3. He's got at least 40% of the vote no matter what he does

It is a sad comment on America that no matter how pathetic Romney is as a candidate, no matter what lies he tells or what miscalculations he makes, he still has the vote of the "anybody but Obama" crowd. Romney is just the public face of a huge propaganda machine that is dedicated to confusing the public with lies and misinformation, making people afraid and inciting the most base elements of society. I'm no political expert, but I'm guessing that he's got about 40% to 45% of the likely voters no matter what he does, as long as he is still standing on election day. It is going to be a close election. Karl Rove most certainly has some good tricks up his sleeve. We need massive Democratic turnout and technical experts guarding the voting machines to win.

They are even MORE strident in their dogma, not less.

We decided to skip those houses that were Strong or Leaning Republican, instead concentrating on registering voters and talking to people on the street. This is something that I really enjoy. Listening to every day people, it's nice.

An army of Liberal_Stalwart71's will go a long way toward helping us to defeat Lord Sauron -- uh, I mean, Romney.

Showing people that we could drive for hours throughout the state just helping people register to vote made them feel good, like they were doing something good.

I had on no Obama t-shirt. There was no indication that I was selling anything. But I am black, so hmm....

The other Republican screamed at my friend who is himself a former conservative Republican who attempted to persuade her as he had been persuaded to finally change parties. She said that "SHE" could do a better job than "that man." She wouldn't call him Obama. We were polite and just told her to have a nice day.

There was one Leaning Dem who we spoke with. He looked to be uppper middle class by the look of his cars. Asian American. Said he was worried about the economy so he may support Romney. He told us that we was getting ready to retire and that gave us an opening. He We attempted to persuade him by telling him that Romney supports an economic plan that would gut social security and drastically alter Medicare. I think we were able to reach him somewhat. We told him that unless he smoked or tanned, his *federal* income taxes have not increased one cent. Told him that the Democrats have passed--and Obama signed into law--at least 17 different tax breaks for small businesses that hire. And that Obama has created an enviroment wherein there has been continued private sector job growth over the last two years and counting. Told him that Republican governors have deliberately laid off public workers at the state level and that's why the unemployment rate continues to be so high. Republicans in Congress have blocked nearly every single jobs proposals that the congressional Democrats have proposed. We tried...

The last person wasn't a "strong" Republican, but we had that he was "Leaning Democrat." When we spoke with him, he told us that he switched his party from Dem to Rep because he "doesn't like Obamacare." This guy looked to be in his late 20s.
