Can Hillary Clinton step forward on race without leaving white voters behind? (Original Post) Skwmom Aug 2015 OP

1. White voters just need to suck it up and deal with reality.

The reality of how the impacts of historic racism are still felt. Such as how persons of color did not have access to all provisions of Social Security or the GI Bill or decent housing, which naturally prevented their heirs from inheriting assets and opportunity.

The reality of ongoing institutional racism.

The reality of white (over)privilege.

From that article: "About one-third of all Democrats reported seeing no discrimination in any area of American life, while a full 49 percent of independents and 61 percent -- way more than a majority -- of Republicans agreed."

That is...words fail me.

The minute she has the nomination sewed up, black lives won't matter any longer.

She'll revert to her default 2008 stance, courting "hard working Americans, white Americans".

Who knows, she might even trot out Bill Clinton for a few gratuitous snarky jabs at President Obama, just to reestablish her redneck creds. Because what are African American voters going to do, vote for Trump or whatever Trump light the republicans toss in there?

...and just because some people voice legitimate criticism, or simply do not agree with Hillary's policies, they accuse them of being, nasty, snarky, and petty! I don't get it.

I am taking Trump seriously - but at the end of the day she'll go up against a guy like Kasich. Regardless of who 'he' is - the candidate will have that 'disgruntled white male voter' sewn up the day he receives the nomination - so she's going to have go very hard for the Democratic party base.

And I think - she's going to need the Bernie supporters firmly in her pocket . . . and I don't think they (you being one) are just going to roll over and take some of her 'affiliations' (prison industry, drug war ideas, etc. etc.)

I'm not seeing anything from Webb or Chaffee supporters - but she's gotta know O'Malley supporters (myself included) will show up for her as long as she moves from talk to specifics on implementation.

esp re: moving from talk to specifics.

IMO, when it comes to the prison industry and drug war stuff, accepting responsibility, showing humility, and a detailed plan to right wrongs is the path to take. Genuinely demonstrate that she will continue what President Obama has started.

it's in the context of which candidate has been more disrupted by BLM or has more support from BLM. That's both telling and sad.

If you were in their shoes, would you vote for a candidate who takes money from an industry advancing modern-day slavery?

She will do fine with the well-off, well-educated 50+ white vote, but she is forgetting where our votes come from. It aint them.

7. The perception is that Clinton is strong on racial justice...

but I'm not sure what that perception is based on. It can't be based on her employing the Southern Strategy against Obama in '08, nor can it really be based on her actions. It seems to be solely based on rhetoric. But perception can be as good as reality, since most people don't really follow politics very closely. They follow the Cult of Personality and the stories that are told.

For me personally, racial justice is the most important issue, and I don't think Clinton or any of the Democratic candidates are very strong on that issue.

She's the difference between another Alito - or a shot at an Obama or Holder on the SCOTUS.

I think she'd do it just to watch Republican heads explode.

O'Malley would do it because they both are qualified and again - Republican heads would explode!
