Do you agree with these specific statements or not?

In light of the mass shooting in Louisiana, Sanders weighed in on gun control.

“Nobody should have a gun who has a criminal background, who's involved in domestic abuse situations. People should not have guns who are going to hurt other people, who are unstable,” Sanders said.

Sanders suggested restricting specific guns and implementing stricter background checks.

“I believe that we need to make certain kinds of guns used to kill people exclusively, not for hunting should not be allowed for sale in the United States of America. We have huge loopholes at gun shows that should be eliminated,” Sanders said.

1. The laws are exactly the same at gun shows as they are anywhere else

2. The guns that are killing people are handguns, not rifles. If he's talking about handguns, I agree, but history suggests he's talking about some rifles

3. "Hunting" is a dog whistle. And less than 20% of gun owners hunt.

4. As far as suggestions, I'd look very closely at what has caused gun violence to absolutely collapse over the past 20 years (it's less than half what it was in 1995), and do more of that.

5. Any attempt to address gun deaths that does not put suicide (2/3rds of gun deaths) and handguns (9/10ths of gun deaths) front and center is difficult for me to take seriously.

(Also, I disagree with O'Malley on gun control even more, so obviously this isn't a deal breaker for me.)

However, I'm assuming he's talking about military-styled rifles, rather than handguns. Handguns are the problem.

But I don't know. Since I think his position on gun control is mostly related to his rural constituents, it may in fact be referring to handguns in addition to "assault" style rifles. He may not have that much to lose locally by taking such a position, and much to gain within the Democratic party.

On the second one, "hunting" is a dog whistle that troubles me (guns are fine for exurban whites, but not for "others&quot , and the laws at gun shows are exactly the same as they are anywhere else.

I don't expect to support a candidate 100 percent of the time. I think Bernie's stances on guns and gun control have been fine throughout his career. They're not a make or breal issue for me.

11. I agree with both, but I don't think Sanders really understands the second statement.

"Guns used to kill people exclusively" means handguns, which are responsible for the overwhelming majority of gun homicides and suicides. Until we get handguns under control, we're not going to get our rates of gun violence and homicide in line with the rest of the developed world.

Sanders likes to point out (correctly) that we are the only advanced nation that doesn't guarantee healthcare to its citizens. But another big difference between the US and every other advanced nation is that we have almost no handgun control at all.

I think there is a possibility that he's threaded the needle though to protect rifles and not handguns.

I don't mean any disrespect to him, despite supporting Hillary in this race, I really like and really respect Senator Sanders. Which is my preface to say, he IS still a politician, and thank goodness he is. That's why he can be an ardent supporter of Single Payer, yet even the week the ACA was further damaged to get Joe Lieberman's and Bill Nelson's support, Bernie was still advocating and voting for it because he saw genuine progress --in fact, in the midst of that, he'd gotten improvements in other parts of the bill.

So I think he's eminently practical.

We'll see what happens.

13. I never agree of-the-cuff about ill-defined references to mental illness and gun control

While I fully support placing the names of persons adjudicated to be 'dangerous to self or other', it is always unclear to me that such ill-defined references to mental illness refer to that.

It's never clear in vague references of mental illness and gun control, just what the hell is the action that is to be put in place.

On its face, keeping guns away from persons with detected mental illness (about 20% of mentally ill persons seek help) and undetected mental illness (about 80% of mentally ill persons never seek help) seems like a perfectly good idea.

But, perfectly golden ideas often prove to be brass when the details are considered.
