2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTPM: New evidence Mitt didn't leave Bain in 1999, courtesy Mitt's SEC filings.
Oy, this is what passes for business sense these days? Publicly contradicting your sworn declarations to the SEC?
The documents go into different aspects of Romneys ownership of various Bain and Bain related assets. But in both Romney had to say what he currently did for a living.
Here are two SEC filings from July 2000 and February 2001 in which Romney lists his principal occupation as Managing Director of Bain Capital, Inc.
Romneys argument is that it doesnt matter what he said on these SEC filings. Even though he said he was running Bain, he really wasnt. He was really running the Olympics and didnt have any role at Bain. But absent any evidence, how is it that anyone can be expected to disregard what Mitt actually told the SEC at the time?

I have seen lots of lying politicians, but Romney takes it to a whole new level.

(19,458 posts).. and he was SO passionate about Democrats, and so full of ideals. Does money do that to a person?? Shame.

(57,936 posts)It might be a pretty serious misrepresentation -- fraud. Might depend on what the lie was about -- whether it was material, that is, really important and something that someone might base a decision on, or just something trivial.
This could be serious. Could be just another proof of sloppy dishonesty on Romney's part.

(1,698 posts)he's wealthy and privileged. He dismisses them. Fucker!

(145,253 posts)Schedule 13ds are filed under oath and there are criminal penalties for making false statements in these documents. Romney is going to have a hard time explaining these documents

Romney needs to discuss this with us. Did he lie on his SEC forms or is he lying now?

(82 posts)the 1% work harder than the rest of us. That's the reason they're CEO's and Board Chairman and so on. Yet, while still CEO, he was too busy working on the Olympics to actually run the company. So, he got something for nothing. Sounds like Socialism!

(349 posts)Again, I'm trying to mine this thread for ideas for ads that can be used as weapons against Romney (for the thread below).
However, I feel like the underlying theme of this thread is lies, and the problem with 'weaponizing' the topic of lies is the complexity. Romney's money is mostly a Class 2 lie of partial truths, and this is intrinsically complicated. Romney's fundamental position is "not a dollar more" and he is just trusting the lawyers and accountants to tell him what the bottom dollar is. Therefore Romney's claim is that it isn't his fault, because it's just so complicated.
Which slogan is the real Romney?
"Vote for me so that government of the corporations, by the lawyers, for the richest 0.1% of Americans, shall rule the earth."
"Vote for me so that government of the accountants, by the lawyers, for the richest 0.1% of Americans, shall rule the earth."

(19,458 posts)Maybe there is more to this than just lying on the SEC papers... perhaps it's something even more intriguing involving Bain and the Olympics. Has anyone done a thorough accounting of the money that flowed thru the Olympics and the sponsors involved?
MADem
(135,425 posts)was doing that Olympic thing. At the same time, he was filing papers as a MA resident to run for governor.
All he does is LIE.
He got trapped into paying full fare on his Utah property taxes, like anyone does who has a "vacation home" away from their state of so-called residence. I doubt he would have repaid if he hadn't been caught.
He's a sleaze. A cheat. A liar.

(1,407 posts)He may in fact not be lying to anyone. SEC filings can often pertain to past company actions. If so, Romney would need to be listed along with his title at the time.

(602 posts)I don't see the SEC wanting to jump on this. It doesn't look like a serious issue to me. I just want to hear Romney's explanation. It is the second lie that tries to explain away the first lie that sometimes ends up being the whopper.
