Bernie Sanders Response to Black Lives Matter Shows That Their Disruptions Are Working
By Zeeshan Aleem August 10, 2015
On Saturday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was interrupted at a rally in Seattle by two protesters claiming affiliation with the Black Lives Matter movement.
<...>
For some members of the left who support both Black Lives Matter and Sanders' candidacy, the two actions represent a troubling strategy. "Don't Piss on Your Best Friend," reads the title of a post by Gawker's Hamilton Nolan, who lambasts the protests as foolish for taking aim at the candidate most likely to improve the socioeconomic conditions of black Americans. In some far-left circles, the disruptions seem so apparently misguided that it was suspected to possibly be the covert work of the government, an attempt to sow discord on the left by pitting black and white organizers against each other.
But for all the worry that the recent protests have been counterproductive, they have not been without impact.
The week after Sanders was shouted down at Netroots, he came out swinging on criminal justice reform, an issue he had failed to address much earlier in his campaign, during a speech at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. This weekend, Sanders announced that a black criminal justice advocate named Symone Sanders will help him develop a robust criminal justice agenda and serve as his national press secretary. And the Stranger documented that on Sunday, the day after Bernie Sanders faced his second disruption, the part of his website laying out his policy priorities had a conspicuous new addition: racial justice.

You know who else is obsessed with Farrakhan? Sean Hannity. He's tried to link Keith Ellison to him:
The Fox host dug up attacks from Ellisons 2006 Congressional campaign, criticizing the Minnesota lawmaker for defending Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam in his law school newspaper from charges of anti-Semitism and appearing on stage with Farrakhan aide Khalid Muhammad. Watch it:

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This is just wrong.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue Aug 11, 2015, 01:55 AM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No idea why this was alerted on
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is getting ridiculous. I don't even understand what this alert about. Leave it.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Yes. Calling someone here a conservative is a personal attack, even when done in a cowardly, passive-aggressive way, as in this case, and defending antisemitism is inexcusable. Racist trolling makes DU suck.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Reason for the alert. "This is just wrong." This a joke correct? Please tell me you made a joke. You wasted my time telling me this is just WRONG! Leave it FFS!
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: frivolous alert.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(9,474 posts)if I had, I'd have explained that the people in the photo (who the op apparently admires) are aligned with a rabid antisemite. Considering that Bernie's Jewish, I don't see how one can espouse racial justice for some and admire people who align themselves with people who hate Jews. The poster was told that and insisted that it wasn't a problem, despite being told by Manny that his relatives and Bernie's had been exterminated by people who though just like them. The level of this poster's disregard for the feelings of other DUer's is quite appalling.
I'm not faulting the jury, as I think the person who alerted probably assumed that the jury would understand the meaning of his/her post without going into detail.
I find it strange that Bernie's supporters are being attacked from all sides for our perceived "white supremacy" and Bernie is being taken to task for what his supporters are allegedly saying, but this poster doesn't seem to understand that it's a two-way street. If one supports/admires people who are aligned with anti-semites, then by the "logic" (and I use that word loosely) being espoused by some DUers, then wouldn't that makes one an anti-semite by association (if one espouses that particular line of reasoning)?

(9,474 posts)keep denigrating Bernie for his supporters? Because if you are, then your admiration for people who support/are aligned with Farrakhan obviously taints you. I mean, if posters here switch their support for a candidate based on the alleged actions of his supporters, then it must work both ways. So now, it IS about Farrakhan. You can't post about racial justice and get in bed with his supporters. Doesn't work that way.

(8,760 posts)Farrakhan recently stated, These are not the times for weak people, for cowardly people. I need 10,000 fearless men, who say, Death is sweeter than continued life under tyranny. Death is sweeter than to live and bury our children while White folks give the killer hamburgers. Retaliation is a prescription from God to calm the breast of those whose children have been enslaved. So, if the federal government will not intercede in our affairs, then we must rise up and kill those who kill us. Stalk them and kill them and let them feel the pain of death that we are feeling!

(3,732 posts)Some of the highlights -
Bernie as as a stand-in for Seattle white liberal culture. (Yes, "White Supremacist Liberals" does seem to be the standard way of looking at living in a really progressive city that still doesn't do right by black people. IMHO, that point of view needs to be listened to more: I live in a similar super-progressive white-washed city).
"I don't give a F about your white gaze."
Claim that the Sarah Palin thing was a result of having Tea Party parents, but now her politics are more radical leftist.
Not a Hillary plant: just can't get past Hillary's security. The call of #BLM is to challenge any candidate anywhere.
Doesn't hate white people: her mom is white.
"Most people say they don't hate black people. The question is, do you *love* black people."
Thinks the whole Democratic party is the same, so getting to Bernie will ultimately shift Hillary.
Is not apologetic. Proud she has people thinking/talking about race.
Is not about supporting political candidates, though she will use them to forward her agenda. She wants to break the systems that "never did anything for black people."
Very worthwhile listen! Thank you.

(8,760 posts)Any strategy would work with Bernie....because he shares the goals of BLM
99th_Monkey
(19,326 posts)And it's working because Bernie was already "there" in the first
place, like for 50 years, so he listened and made some minor
adaptations to his website. which is awesome.
Bernie also had BLM at his LA rally tonite to speak before he did,
also hella-awesome as well:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/aug/11/bernie-sanders-talks-with-nurses-in-san-francisco-/
And it's working because Bernie's committed to representing
all the people, bringing people together as he puts it, to have
a fucking Political Revolution like we haven't seen before.
So yes, it's working, like that.

But they don't want real dialog, they want attention. Yeah, the disruptions will work- till they no longer work. Then what? Violence? Because imo they're on the edge of that now.
