2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI disrupted Bill Maher on stage last night in Durham (NC)--for Bernie!--
and the practically sold out audience applauded when he stopped and
made a favorable comment about Bernie and then went on with his basically
ho-hum comments about Hillary. Hillary did NOT gain much applause.
I have to say if you like Bill Maher much--and I know there are folks on DU
who don't care for him--and ever have the chance to go see him in person, do it.
He is very, very funny.
Back to the Hillary/Bernie comments, though. We had seats close enough to the
stage that when he started his comments about Hillary--his schtick was "are you
ready for Hillary"--very little applause-- lukewarm, I'd say--I hollered "Bernie" he
stopped a second and looked my direction, so I hollered Bernie again. It got his
attention and he made a favorable comment about Bernie, for which the audience
warmly applauded, and then went on with his monologue about Hillary. No reaction
from the audience. Just none--and that was his point! He had jokes about
us being ready for Hillary like we're ready to get your teeth cleaned at the dentist!
He spent a lot of time making jokes about the clown car--talked in detail about Trump
and the lawsuit that Trump filed against him because he referred to one of his parents
being an orangutan--and generally had the packed house in stitches. By the end of
the show I had tears running down my face I was laughing so hard.
So...what to take away from this? A major comedian who makes his living sending up
politics and politicians has NOT integrated anything about Bernie into his current
comedy routine that he's taking on the road, and instead focuses on Hillary. In Durham,
there was much more enthusiasm for the mention of Bernie than Hillary.

(31,399 posts)for Bernie than Hillary. Granted, this is the heart of the most progressive
area in NC--other than Asheville--and when Bill went back to his monologue
after I caused him to say something about Bernie--he said, "Are you ready for Hillary?"
There was not ONE word, woo-hoo, any applause, just NOTHING in response. Totally
flat. To me, that was very telling.
Yes, we all know that Hillary will be better for us than any Republican alternative, but
in that crowd, there was no enthusiasm. Just silence in response to the question,
"Are you ready for Hillary?"

(31,399 posts)the "Are you ready for Hillary" question was noted. It was TOTAL silence, unlike most
of the rest of the night. Durham is a great crowd for him. He even mentioned it
at the end of the show because he taped a special here once.
We saw him a couple of years ago when he was here. He was funny then, but I thought
more so last night. I hadn't wanted to go--didn't want to spend the $$ because we had
to get resale tickets--but my husband really wanted to go. I'm glad we did, now, because
I think he was much funnier this time.

She's an establishment corporatist.

(14,881 posts)she waits until long past the moment before offering tepid statements that are drowned out by the meme of the day.
I'm guessing the plan is that later on, when topics are revisited, she'll have tapes ready showing her "restraint" and "wisdom."

(57,137 posts)comedy routine... focuses on Hillary..." because Hillery(and Donald tRump) is funny and Bernie isn't.
That's a good thing. But I bet he has some material in his next tour.

With Jon Stewart gone, he needs to step it up

(31,399 posts)drive me nuts. My husband rarely misses Real Time.
But I have to admit that he was really, really funny last night...and not just about the clown car.
He did a send up of the Cialis commercials that made me laugh so hard my abdominal muscles hurt!
And he really went after religion. There were a few people who walked out--and given the geographical area
I would guess it was due to how much he poked fun at religion.
amuse bouche
(3,657 posts)but I do love how he goes after religion and I rarely disagree with him
It's great to witness someone that gives people a true belly laugh. That takes amazing talent

(210 posts)This will be my 5th time seeing him live. He's best doing stand-up. I love his show and watch every episode. But his stand up routines are where he truly shines. He is one of the strongest voices our side has. I will continue to buy tickets anytime he does stand-up in my area for as long as he keeps doing it.

(31,399 posts)I'm curious whether he will be doing Bernie jokes by then.
I'll take note of what he says about Bernie. By then I'm sure he'll have more to say. Hopefully he will have felt the Bern by then-

And I say that as someone who has endured three root canals, including one in Belize City after a scuba diving accident.

(31,399 posts)We went to Belize in 2005 to investigate having an out of the country house
to escape Bush & Co. We did a tour guided by a couple from Los Angeles
who had moved there in the late 80's and we heard a lot about the dental
care and going across the border to Mexico for health care. I understand
there is a fair amount of dental tourism to Belize for dental work at very
reasonable prices.

(15,480 posts)As you know, English is the national language, which made everything simpler. At that time, San Pedro had one physician, and a dentist who visited once a week. The doc saw me after the accident, and called and arranged an appointment that afternoon with her dentist in the capitol city. Flew over in a 6 seater plane. Took a cab (which looked like something form 1950's Havanna) with dice hanging from the rear view mirror to the dentist's office on Cemetary Street, It was in a small house, surrounded by security wire fencing (8 feet tall), and next to an evangelical church with services and a whole lotta enthusiastic singing going on.
The dentist had his degree on the wall - University of Guatemala. Having had previous root canals, I asked him to give me a prescription for antibiotics and I'd get the procedure done when I got back to the States. On learning that would not be for another week, he regretfully told me that since the root of my broken tooth had already been exposed to sea water, it was likely already seriously infected and it would be dangerous for me to wait a week to have the root removed. I was really scared of having the procedure done there. He looked SO young, and his equipment was so old and out of date, compared to U.S. dental offices. But being basically a gutsy person, and not wanting to give up the rest of my vacation, I agreed.
This guy was perfect! Even the numbing shots to my upper front mouth did not hurt! When he was done, he gave me an x-ray and a written description of the size of drill, the depth he drilled to, etc., for me to give to my dentist back home. Then he apologetically told me my bill was $36.50 U.S. dollars. I had a great rest of trip in Belize - climbed Mayan pyramids, traveled in-country on a small boat up a narrow river with parrots flying overhead, monkeys swinging from the trees, etc. When I got home, my dentist said the Belizean dentist did a perfect job. My dentist blanched when I told him the cost!
As they say, You Better Belize It!
