2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo, wearing "Bernie 2016" buttons, two mature women walk into a restaurant
We were having dinner before the monthly meeting of the South County Democrats. As we entered the restaurant, wearing our Bernie 2016 buttons, the other patrons practically jumped us, asking if there was a house party or some other Bernie event that evening or that we had just left. We explained that we were on our way to the monthly meeting of Democrats in our area. However, the conversation in the restaurant continued to evolve around Bernie, what a great candidate he is, why hadn't they been contacted to perform volunteer work yet, etc.
We had steeled ourselves for a backlash when we arrived at the actual meeting because we suspected that most of the female members were Hillary supporters. To our surprise this was not true. One elderly woman did comment that Bernie was too old (which is a typical remark from Hillary supporters), but I did not let that go unchallenged and other members smiled as a tactfully defanged that argument and presented my rationale for Bernie.
This is a conservative area; however, on July 29, in this sparsely populated county on the Central Coast of California, over 500 people attended the Bernie event online. There is a lot more support for Bernie out there than the MSM is willing to acknowledge.
[I was advised to move this post to this forum as it will probably be closed in the GD forum.]

You got that right. The one thing they can't control is the interwebs and the power of face to face communication. We've got to spread the Bern!

(8,846 posts)An acquaintance, who works at the 7-11 next door, was telling everyone in the place how her husband is going nus over Bernie. She's never seen him this excited over a presidential candidate. He's ready to work his ass off.
On the media front, I had a LTTE printed in the Tampa Bay Times today. But, they edited the shit out of it.
Original:
Subject: How did the media miss a historic moment?
How did the Times, along with just about every other mainstream media, manage to miss, or more likely ignore, the biggest political story of the year?
On Wed., July 29th over 100,000 people gathered at approx 3,500 homes and other venues to organize support for a grassroots Bernie Sanders campaign. Several were held in the Bay Area. Sanders has continually drawn the biggest crowds across the nation to hear him speak. Venues have to be changed to accommodate larger audiences, and they still have overflow crowds. Red States, Blue States, it doesn't matter.
We can read all about how Jeb Bush thinks it's a good thing to cut Social Security and Medicare. Or the next dumb thing that pops into Marco Rubios or Donald Trumps head. Hillary is just there with a substance-free campaign, but she draws media attention.
Only one candidate actually talks about raising Social Security, making college affordable, and expanding Medicare for all. He's bypassing the billionaires and mounting a historic grassroots campaign for people who are fed up with the status quo.
And you keep ignoring it.

Media misses history
How did the Tampa Bay Times, along with just about every other mainstream media organization, miss or give little attention to the biggest political story of the year?
On July 29, over 100,000 people gathered at approximately 3,500 homes and other venues to organize support for a grass roots Bernie Sanders campaign. Only one candidate actually talks about raising Social Security, making college affordable and expanding Medicare for all. He's bypassing the billionaires and mounting a historic grass roots campaign. And the media keeps ignoring it.

(254 posts)I've hear him say he wants to spread social security to more people. But, I don't recall him stating that he wants to increase the amount of social security payments to current beneficiaries.
Perhaps someone can help me here??

So it's up to US to spread his message. Like Thom Hartmann says at the end of every show ... "Democracy is not a spectator sport. TAG! You're it!"

(469 posts)Comcast is a giant, and it OWNS NBC (and the allegedly "liberal" news channel, MSNBC.) Disney is not small potatoes, and it owns ABC. I'm not sure if CBS is owned by, or is the parent company of, a media conglomerate, but I can't trust any media outfit that brags about how many different outlets they own in a given market (nearly a dozen in the greater NYC area!)
Then there's Big Pharma - have you LISTENED to those ads? Do you really think that the list of side effects that comprises the bulk of those ads actually sell pills? That ain't the point, though - it's not about selling ANYTHING - it's about buying INFLUENCE!

She ignored Obama, thinking he had no chance. She is repeating her mistake with Bernie. The problem is she is not a strong campaigner. It dos not come naturally to her, and I suspect she likes the trimmings, but not the core of what it takes. Bill as a natural, she is not.

"First they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then - you win."
I think Bernie has already reached stage 3, or at least somewhere between stages 2 & 3.

(75,480 posts)It was several parties including one in an auditorium community room. That was the one we attended. Our county is mostly rural and sparsely populated by conservatives. 500 people in this county is phenomenal.
Hillary Who?

(67,782 posts)...just like in Texas (combining Dallas and Houston attendance) aggregate attendance is now being reported on.

(3,128 posts)We did have over 200 at the venue that I attended in the county public library. It was standing room only. People kept coming. I was very surprised as we have a high percentage of wealthy retired people who usually vote Republican.
We are a sparsely populated county of largely vineyards and agriculture. The enthusiasm for Bernie Sanders here amazes me!

(1,554 posts)I was all excited and said that I figured the majority of women were for Hillary. They said that Bernie spoke more to their concerns and they were all in for him. I was very glad to hear their sentiments and they said that most of their female friends felt the same way.
But what do I know? Everyone knows he's unelectable and only appeals to old, liberal, white men.
Get ready to feel the Bern!

(1,253 posts)The place was full of women artists, and after the drinks flowed for awhile the talk turned to politics. Not a Hillary supporter in the bunch. I was shocked, quite frankly, figuring at least a few of them would be in Hillary's camp, but, to a women they all feel HRC's WAY too close to Corporate America to challenge the status quo. (14,337 posts)They have also convinced Mom to support him too. So Hillary has lost the support of 3 WOMEN, both young and old. I think Hillary has far too much baggage, and is too much "in bed" with Corporate interests. I will never support a candidate purely on gender alone. I believe in gender neutral when it comes to politics. If a male is the better candidate, so be it.
