No, Debbie, *Here's* Who We Need To Watch *(UPDATED X 2!!!)
by nailbender
I got an email yesterday from Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the DNC, titled "Here's who we need to watch." It was an email that was actually advertising the GOP Primary Debate tomorrow night! Here's the whole thing:
Donald Trump. Jeb Bush. Scott Walker. Mike Huckabee. Ben Carson. Ted Cruz. Marco Rubio. Rand Paul. Chris Christie. John Kasich.
It's official: This is the GOP's A-team -- the 10 candidates who get to be on stage in the primetime slot on Thursday.
We already know that any one of these top Republican contenders would be a disastrous choice for president. That's why I'm going to be on the ground in Cleveland, watching closely so we're ready to fight back early and often.
RSVP here if you're planning on watching, too.
Here's what we know we can expect: Mudslinging at each other and promises to undo all the progress President Obama and Democrats have made over the last seven years. That's why we need our most committed supporters to be on the lookout with us and help push back. And that's exactly where you come in, Bruce.
Can we count on you to tune in on Thursday? Just click here and we'll send you a reminder (and you'll get access to play our online GOP Bingo game!):
http://my.democrats.org/page/s/watch-the-gop-debate-on-thursday?source=em_20150803_dnc_misc&utm_medium=email&utm_source=dnc&utm_campaign=em_20150803_dnc_misc
We couldn't do this without you, Bruce.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz
Chair
Democratic National Committee
Jesus. What a joke. Except it's not a joke.
So the Chair of the DNC, in a brilliant strategic move, is encouraging Democrats to inflate the ratings of the FOX News network as they go about the business of promoting the personalities and policies of the GOP Presidential field??? And she's hoping we'll use the DNC's Bingo game to make a fun night out of it???
This is not a game, Debbie, it's the most critical political juncture in the history of the world (and that's not even close to hyperbole) and your plan is for us to sit down with popcorn and Bingo cards and have some fun! Meanwhile, the whole country (and the world) is going to be subjected, without a countervailing event from the Democrats, to the distortions of the John Birch Society that has rebranded itself as the Modern GOP.
Notes to Debbie:
1) "Early" is passing us by. As of this date in 2007, the Dems had already had 6 POTUS candidate debates, with 3 more upcoming in just the next two weeks of that cycle. So much for "early."
2) "Often"??? How often? You've "scheduled" only 6 DNC Primary debates in total for the whole Primary season! In 2008, with Howard Dean chairing the DNC, there were 26 Dem primary debates, 20 more than you're seeing fit to hold. So much for "often."
3) "So we're ready to fight back?" What? We're not ready yet and we have to subject ourselves to what you correctly point out will be a tired rehash of the failed policies and character assassinations we've endured for decades? If we're not already "ready," we're in very deep shit, Debbie.
It's been 3 full months since you "scheduled" the DNC Primary debates, Debbie, and I'm putting quotes around "scheduled" because you haven't scheduled even one of them so far, only made vague promises that the first one will be this Fall. Fall officially ends on December 21, so if you keep slow-walking this, we might not see a Dem debate till just before Christmas.
Over the fold, I will get to the underlying problem.
Who we need to watch, Debbie, are the Dem Candidates juxtaposed to the GOP wrecking crew, in a debate setting where the country and the world can actually observe the difference between the two sets of candidates, one set proposing policies and ideas that will benefit the entire country and our environment, and the other intent on driving us off the multiple cliffs we're headed toward right now.
And no, it won't be enough for just you to stand in front of a FOX microphone after the debate tomorrow and present the Dem perspective as if you're representing all the Dem candidates. You are not neutral with respect to the Democratic field; we know that your loyalties lie with just one of them because you were her campaign co-chair in '08 and the main reason you're still chairing the DNC after the historic debacle of the 2014 midterms is because Hillary can count on you to run interference for her. That's exactly why we don't have DNC debates scheduled yet, because they're perceived as a liability for Hillary.
How do I know this? because Hillary began to lose her lead to Obama in an '07 debate and never got her momentum back. On October 7, CNN published a poll that showed Hillary 30 points ahead of Obama (a similar spread to yesterday's WSJ/NBC poll that has Hillary and Bernie 35 points apart). Then, two weeks later on October 30, there was a Dem primary debate in Philadelphia where Hillary stumbled badly on two items: immigration (she tried to straddle the issue of whether illegal aliens should be give drivers licenses) and secrecy (around the issue of Bill telling the National Archives not to release any communications between the two of them till 2012, which she tried to palm off on "the process").
Following that debate, in which Hillary was considered the loser, polling began to dramatically shift in Obama's direction. On January 5, just before the NH primary and on the heels of Obama's IA win, there was the Nashua NH "change" and "likeability" debate, following which polling showed Clinton and Obama tied.
Now there was obviously a lot more going on in the contest than just the debates, but it's incontrovertible that Obama's eventual Primary victory was aided in large part by the debate process. This is why we now have the slow-walking of the 2016 Dem debates. The longer they wait the greater the chance that Bernie will stumble and become irrelevant. He's already stumbled a few times and recovered, but a debate is a situation where Hillary can stumble, as she's shown she can do in the past, and that's a chance the DNC is trying to avoid till the very last minute.
It's time to give us a real contest, Debbie. It's time to stop favoring you favored candidate. It's time for the Dems to debate each other so that the country can compare us to the GOP, and time to stop letting them have the nationally televised stage all to themselves.
UPDATE: I just caught a news item from the Daily Beast that indicates the DNC will be announcing the debate schedule in a week or so. We'll see what happens. Not counting chickens just yet.

She would have failed IF actual Left/Progressives had won those seats.
The people don't matter much as we see with the TPP eg.
Leave Debbie alone, she's doing a fine job! The one you should be worried about, as the Third Way is, is Elizabeth Warren. As two founders of the Third Way said re Warren, 'she needs to moderate her rhetoric'.
The above paragraph is probably bad satire, however it's true imo.

I'm sure she's been hoping Bernie will just go away if she can postpone the first debate for a long enough period of time.

(19,537 posts)Maybe the DCCC will back her heavily, but I think there are enough of us fed up out there that would fund a challenger of hers, that perhaps we could actually get that House race to have more debates than she wants at the presidential level and maybe even give it national coverage so that people can see her answer questions as to why she isn't having more presidential debates and defend her sorry ass!
I'd donate a bit of money to a challenger of hers!

Call the DNC at (202) 863-8000
Hello.
My name is [Name] of [City, State] and I am calling the Democratic National Committee today regarding the upcoming Democratic primary debates. As of now, there are six primary debates planned; in the 2008 election cycle, there were twenty-six debates, which is over four times as many. I urge that the DNC increases the number of debates, as called for by Governor O'Malley and Senator Sanders, so that we may be better informed on the candidates. Thank you for your time.
Send the DNC an email using their official form
Dear Mrs. Wasserman Schultz,
I am contacting you today in regards to the upcoming Democratic primary debates. As of now, there are six primary debates scheduled; in the 2008 election cycle, there were twenty-six debates, which shows a decrease in the number of debates by over four times. In an effort to become an informed voter, I feel I have exhausted my options for learning about each candidate's stances and opinions through their official campaign publications. However, seeing how candidates contrast each other when debating is a key part in deciding who to support. Six debates are far too few to make an informed decision about who should represent the Democratic Party in the 2016 general election, especially considering that these are the only debates in which the candidates can participate. I urge you to respect the requests of your supporters and of Senator Bernie Sanders and Governor Martin O'Malley by increasing the number of primary Democratic debates. The debates for the 2008 election cycle were fantastic as after twenty-six debates, I'm sure most can agree that the differences between the candidates were clear.
Thank you for representing the interests of the Democratic Party members.
Sincerely,
(insert name of pissed off person here)

As time flies by and I gain in years and begin to tire, your youthful exuberance and passion will become more streamlined as will your ability to promote positive change among the people you correspond with. People such as myself will be relying on you. I'm not there yet but when I do really tire, which I am already starting to feel unfortunately, you will be moving into your prime and will become my greatest advocate. I truly love your passion and your advocacy of a progressive message will really become a thing of beauty as you work your way through your life. Thanks, you are a sign that I have a lot to look forward to and the next generation will keep working to move us forward after my generations progressive voices begin to fade.
How the hell do Sanders and Hillary do it? Healthy living I guess. So much energy.

(7,321 posts)This one should be bookmarked as an informative resource and you've provided a much needed reminder of the chronology wrt 2008's campaign debates and the correlating results as well as an important reminder of how much hard work and enormous contributions grassroots work vis a vis Howard Dean and activists/supporters had accomplished. all to be completely undone by Debbie.
I think the harm Debbie has done will not be fully measured or recognized until long after the 2016 is behind us. And that's truly a shame.

This is really shameful interference in the Democratic Party's nomination process.
For shame, Debbie.
We voters want more debates and we want them sooner.
That is especially true for those of us in states like California with late primaries and no swing-state status.

I called 'em. They hung up on me as I requested a Dem debate schedule and of course when I suggested there is something Wrong with their "strategery" - they hung up.
So, possible conclusions
A) They don't GARA and are going to continue to work towards complete corporate takeover of the dem party or:
B) They are so densely Disassociated with "the poors" in the "Big Tent Dem Party" that we are Literally Invisible to them Or;
C) There is a really Small Pup Tent where the Big Tent, we keep hearing about, Used to be/is Supposed to be.

(5,178 posts)It's all about working hand in hand with multinational corporations, with Birchers, war mongers, slave traders and snowball carrying senators, not against them.
Its OK to attack the ideas coming from the corporate funded con game against the world, but not the actual game producing, espousing and expanding the cons for us to pretend to do battle with.
As long as one never considers the role they play in the funneling of wealth and power to the 10% of this world, one never has to consider the realities being created and played out for their benefit.
For some it is a Fox News reality, for others MSNBC. It is all brought to you by Wall St.
We all exist, survive, in the most reality shareholders will allow us to have. As long as you are safely insulated inside the corporate bubble, you rarely have to pay attention to the atrocities committed outside it.

(248 posts)Mark my words, after the republicans have had a couple of months of unchallenged bile to spew at Hillary, without any Dem debates to rebut their nonsense, her negatives will have grown even higher. Not to mention her Benghazi testimony taking place in October (which will really have the repubs frothing at the mouth). Hillary will have been weakened substantially. It may (or may not) result in Bernie (or one of the other Dems) taking the nomination, or if Hillary gets coronated, she will be so weakened that she will likely lose the general election. If DWS thinks she is protecting Hillary by delaying these debates, she is wrong. I guess DWS figures Hillary can use her $2.5 Billion campaign fund that she will have racked up to blanket the airwaves with warm and fuzzy ads to repair her negatives by election day. I say let the Dems debate sooner and often. I think Hillary would hold her own in a debate, and we all know Bernie is not going to attack her. So whats the worry?
