BURLINGTON, Vt. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose presidential campaign was endorsed over the weekend by Friends of the Earth, on Monday applauded President Barack Obamas proposal on climate change and issued the following statement:
I applaud President Obama for recognizing that climate change is the great planetary crisis facing our country and the world. I support his plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants and to promote more wind and solar power and other sources of renewable energy.
It is time for Republicans in Congress to stop obstructing efforts to transform our energy system away from fossil fuels and toward energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
I understand that Republicans, including many of those running for president, are dependent on the Koch brothers, oil companies and other fossil-fuel contributors. Maybe for once they can overcome the needs of their campaign contributors and worry instead about the planet they are leaving their kids and grandchildren and young people all over the world.

(19,326 posts)Bernistas tend to give credit, where credit is due, just as Sanders is doing here,
and on the Iran deal as well.
I also applaud Obama's actions on Climate Change & Iran, as i suspect most Bernistas
do as well.
So I call BS on your post.

Some think political points are more important. The GOP seems to lead the way, but sadly some others follow.

(4,775 posts)Obama is clearly a corporatist, though I've never though of him as evil. It's a good thing that Obama steped up to address the daunting climate situation we're in, we need all the efforts from everywhere we can get, and everything we've got won't be enough, so bring it all.
The Bernie supporters I know are more concerned with issues than with personalities. Many of us wanted Warren before Bernie, though Bernie has done such a great job I've stopped wishing for Warren. Anyway we're not cult members, we just want real reforms, we are happy to see them wherever they come from.

Climate Change & Environment
The United States must lead the world in tackling climate change, if we are to make certain that this planet is habitable for our children and grandchildren. We must transform our energy system away from polluting fossil fuels, and towards energy efficiency and sustainability. Millions of homes and buildings need to be weatherized, and we need to greatly accelerate technological progress in wind and solar power generation.
Unless we take bold action to address climate change, our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are going to look back on this period in history and ask a very simple question: Where were they? Why didnt the United States of America, the most powerful nation on earth, lead the international community in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and preventing the devastating damage that the scientific community told us would surely come?
KEY ACTIONS
Introduced the gold standard for climate change legislation with Sen. Barbara Boxer to tax carbon and methane emissions.
Led the opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline.
Secured $3.2 billion in the economic stimulus package for grants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in a program that has funded upgrades for more than 86,000 buildings and installed more than 9,500 solar energy systems.

Obama is showing courage on this issue. So is Bernie. This is a Democratic issue that unites us.
