2016 Postmortem

BuzzFeed:...snip...
One of the things that really impressed me today about her presentation was her ability to really empathize with the plight of African Americans and to not mince the words and try to make it politically correct, said Kevin E. Hooks, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Urban League. Hooks, a Clinton supporter since the early days, said her emotive comments about the injustice of racial profiling mark some of the most effective remarks hes ever heard her make.
I really think shes coming into her own, Hooks said. Shes starting to hone her message and really understand how to communicate it to us in a way [black people] can receive it well. Were at the point now where we can tell really who she is and that this is truly what she believes. It almost felt like she was really good at freestyling.
...snip...
Attendees said she came off as being authentic and comfortable, characteristics that she doesnt always exhibit on the campaign trail.
Anyone want to suggest that the audience doesn't really understand who they should be voting for?

(669 posts)The folks who attended the Urban League convention aren't representative of a large swath of black voters that have read Michelle Alexander's book, know about the "first Black President's" history and Hillary's support of what he did when he was in office, and aren't particularly fond of Bill or Hillary Clinton.
I have spoken to a great deal of friends of mine who are black professionals and the only reason Hillary is polling as well as she is with black voters is because of name recognition.
You will know them by their actions, not their words. I will not be voting for her in the primary.

(669 posts)I'm a black male, with a JD and an MBA. I didn't vote for Hillary in the 2008 primaries because of her race baiting shit show attacks in 2008 and her support in the 90's for her husband's claptrap policy which devastated black communities.
The fact that she enjoys ANY support among black voters is quit an enigma.

(11,366 posts)I happen to see TONS of PoC supporting Bernie, so I vehemently disagree with the person down-thread who seems to think he knows everything about this issue.
Don't y'all ever visit other forums? If you don't, you'd see that support, too.

(31,849 posts)the folks that attended the Urban League convention DO represent a large swath of Black voters ... particularly, politically/socially active Black voters.
Funny ... I, too, have spoken with Black professionals and NONE of them have indicated, as such. In fact, I recently attended an event of 50+ Black professionals, who are politically and socially active and there was not a peep about name recognition ... well, one person raised it, mockingly.

We aren't talking about random people at a movie ,sports game, or concert.

(31,849 posts)Crazy ain't it? Politically active folks attending an advocacy group's national convention are uninformed?

(24,544 posts)And I STILL want to know what that person was talking about. The idea that the Urban League doesn't represent black voters is fucking news to me.

(31,849 posts)he was/is attempting to claim intellectual superiority over "them folks" ... As is, generally, the case when one holds, and know they hold, a minority opinion ... it's because you are smarter/more informed/more insightful than they are.

(99,710 posts)It's foolish to discount one's personal experiences when he or she shares them with you...It's also foolish to infer from one person's experience universal applications. I have told this story before. I had an African American business partner who hated Obama, loved the Tea Party and derided his relatives who lived in Section Eight housing. I never for one second believed he wasn't speaking for anybody but his bootstrap believing self.

(24,544 posts)Would it be the 85-90% support she receives from black people that lead you to say this, the huge numbers of poc at her events or the standing ovation she receives when she speaks at minority themed organizations?

It would take a virtual God to have it be universally accepted that someone gave a good, comfortable, flowing speech......it is inevitable that her speech will be slammed, not for it's content, but delivery. Just waiting.

(35,015 posts)She has never appeared very warm and fuzzy, and that perception hurts her among voters. So her campaign makes sure fluff pieces like this are written, and air commercials featuring her mother, to show us she really truly does care and is carefree.
A metamorphosis right before our eyes!

Good on Hillary for telling white America to stop pretending that their experiences are black people's experiences. Practice some empathy.
