2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMedia Prediction: Bernie versus Hillary
Big money media is scared of Bernie. They see the same force that has cut into their profits via social media and the web, backing Bernie.
Bernie is not a hot prospect for lots of campaign commercials the big media just loves filling up the ever increasing commercial ad times they feast on. Bernie is not good news for big media.
Hillary, however, promises more of the same big cash cow that big media has gorged itself on and which Citizens United has fertilized. The last thing big media wants is for there not to be more and more commercial time airing on public airways.
Therefore, we will see the media, in cahoots with the republicans - who also fear Bernie's low budget, high on People campaign - giving Hillary a big boost to help her win the Democratic Party primary, thereby ensuring their profits and continued feasting.
It makes perfect business sense for big media to try their best to make sure Hillary wins the primary. Watch for the signs and you'll see I am correct.

Read the OP again, apparently, for the first time. Your answer is there.

(26,366 posts)the closer the contest the more interest in it and the higher their ratings.
Although Sanders may not have a lot of money for ads Clinton does, and
a closer contest would likely result in her campaign spending more on ads
and there would also likely be more ad spending by big-moneyed interests
opposed to Sanders.

(13,685 posts)Bernie is a threat to win the primary, thereby ensuring reduced revenue from the Democratic side in the GE.
Hillary winning the primary would ensure a full blown spending spree from both sides.
Bernie's campaign will have to be fought, but it won't be fought on TV. The revolution will not be televised. TV and print is the big money media cash cow. They will protect their own and Hillary is their insurance.

(46,585 posts)But Bernie's campaign operates largely in social media. The MSM can't ignore Bernie's upward trend and trajectory in polling. They can't ignore his huge rallies. Bernie was masterful handling Chuck Toad on Meet the Press today. They can't help but cover him.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)While trying to make a fool out of Bernie. But, like you say, they are the ones being made to look like fools on the Meet the Press shows.
On my TV news, I have seen Hillary, everyday, speaking. Not one vid showing Bernie speaking. It has been my experience that big money media knows how to play the game and make sure it makes money. They do that by favoring the cash cow campaigns. Bernie is no cash cow and never will be.

(46,585 posts).. that the more Hillary is in the public eye, the more people dislike her. She has monster negatives and they're growing. Bernie will debate either DNC sanctioned or otherwise if they keep jerking him around, and it will be over. He will annihilate Hillary with truth and his record and it will be awesome. She's running a tightly scripted campaign of fluff and bullshit, and if she refuses to debate that will be close to the death knell for her. Damned if she does and, well, you know the rest. Checkmate.

(13,685 posts)Why Romney actually won! Screamed the headlines.
What the media says and what is reality are usually quite different.
The media, when they look at the bottom line, will read, Hillary in the GE, is best for the media's bottom line.
So, M$M news, after the Bernie debates, will scream "Hillary wins".

(46,585 posts)Truthfully I don't think I'd wear well through the daily grind of another campaign covered by the MSM and the subsequent jury here day after day. I've got a new job that consumes a good deal of my time. Like I said, the epicenter of Bernie's campaign thrives in social media outside of the mainstream and I think he's got a decent shot at the title. I still believe we the people will decide and the media Heathers can bite me.
Back to work. Cheers.

(13,685 posts)I think given fair and even-handed reporting, it will be Bernie in a landslide.
Just don't expect a fair and even-handed M$M reporting.

(9,497 posts)Too many cell phones, too many people getting their news from independent sources. There is still an Occupy network in place. The people have dispersed into different issue politics but they still are in contact with each other. I like to see Bernie go up in the polls, but I know the polls are a small picture of what is happening.
And there is a lot of movement with Bernie and hopefully we will have him in the general election!

They want ad revenue. Anything that may have a negative impact on their ad revenue - read Bernie - must be defeated.

(12,655 posts)that m$m wants an "epic" showdown between clinton and bush. even though that choice might turn off a lot of young people from voting and could result in the lowest voter turnout in decades. m$m does not care. they care about profits. and most of their viewing audience is older, since the millenials get their news elsewhere.
they also do not want bernie elected for obvious reasons. he will not continue to support their corporate rigged economic system
edit to add...the saddest thing about this hillary v bernie thing is that omalley has gotten lost. he is a strong progressive with experience and great ideas. and it is as though he doesn't exist to the msm. another reason why we need debates and soon. all candidates need to be seen and heard
