Congress needs to act on gun reform. Opinion by Martin O'Malley in The Boston Globe

Stopping the preventable deaths of American citizens should not be a partisan issue, or the purview of special interests. These members of Congress need to find the courage to do the right thing, without fear of the NRA’s clout, come next election.

It’s not enough just to “have the conversation.” It’s time for actual leadership and action.

Posted earlier as part of another thread, but important to see his by-line appearing in national press, imo.

... During the first 204 days of 2015, there have been 204 mass shootings: a mass shooting for every day of the year.

These tragedies aren’t isolated incidents or even “accidents” as some have called them — they’re part of a full-blown epidemic.

We cannot let this become the new normal. As we mourn for the lives cut short — for the victims and the loved ones they leave behind — we can’t just sit by and wait for another tragedy to happen again.

Incidents like the shooting at a church in South Carolina represent the reality of gun violence in America.

We need comprehensive gun safety laws to save lives...

Movie theaters, schools, places of work & worship should be safe spaces, free from guns and gun violence. Praying for Lafayette today. -O’M[/b]

The absurdity and suicidal nature of America's gun culture is a huge issue for me.

Even Tombstone had more gun regulations than the state of Louisiana.

Some states have gone completely insane when it comes to open carry, and allowing guns in public places, schools, churches, bars, and any other place that does not specifically "ban" guns from their establishments. Things need to change, and we have to start now, not later.

It will be interesting to see if potential voters will respond in a meaningful way. I somehow doubt it.

Now if America really wants this, he should rise to number one in the polls. We'll see. I don't think Americans really want it as a whole or majority. If they did, O'Malley would rise to the top.

...which is as good a demonstration as any to the issues and concerns he's raising in this campaign. This man is serious about leading the nation. We're lucky he's made this his ambition.
