2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDid I understand this correctly?
On Martin Bashir if I understood correctly. The announcement which President Obama made today was going to be Romney's great compromise to solve the immigration problem? If so will he take credit or denounce it?
I am sure this will be considered political, but fine it was the right thing to do (something Republicans don't understand), but I am sure it will help the President with the latino vote. But, won't it also force the Republicans to run even more to the right alienating them from latinos even more?

(769 posts)1) The president doesn't have the authority to do this.
2) It gives the pukes 5 months to attack him over this issue. He should have waited until October.

(16,916 posts)As Chief Executive, determining how the laws of the US are enforced is one of the primary authorities given to the President.
And by giving "the pukes 5 months to attack him over this issue" Obama defines the debate. This is absolutely an issue Obama would rather be discussing. It not only supports the meme that a "Do Nothing" Congress forced him to this path through severe lack of ability to get the damn job done themselves, but everyday spent arguing whether we should punish and deport immigrant soldiers underscores the negative image of Republicans as extremists on immigration.

(769 posts)taxation on the 1%. Simply by deciding not to prosecute anyone who made over 100k and chose not to file or pay taxes.
He gets a tax cut on these people with no say from congress.
demwing
(16,916 posts)A President Romney could have done that with or without Obama's stand on immigration.

I wonder if a future republican president decides that its in his power to not enforce the law with regard to filing income taxes for people who make over 250k because he can't get a tax cut through congress how that will play out

(20,450 posts)the DREAM Act. Then, you guys complain that the president isn't doing anything on the immigration isuse. He then bipasses Congress to get something done, and you guys complain about that.
I'm so fucking sick of this shit. Really, I am!!
Executive Orders are common and there's nothing illegal or unconstitutional about them. Besides, the Republicans need to shut the fuck up! St. Ronnie Raygun would've supported what Obama did:

(32,094 posts)This is one of those posts that makes me wish that DU had such a thing.
BTW, it wasn't an Executive Order. It was a change in policy. The claims of it being an EO is something the right is whining about, and it's not surprising that they'd spread this dishonest meme.

A super energized Hispanic registration and GOTV campaign will have a dramatic impact not only on the Presidential campaign but on Congressional and Senate races as well.
When it comes to pure bare knuckled politics this has win win win all the way around.
There isn't going to be a backlash against it because Americans generally support giving innocent kids a break. I had lunch today with a colleague who is a deep red neck who doesn't think the President has done anything right but doesn't trust Romney. When he heard this he said "finally Obama did something right I have heard about sending those kids back, what are they going to do when they arrive in El Salvador or Mexico when they have lived here their whole life. Just doesn't make sense to send them back".

(14,180 posts)the fight for independents begins in earnest. Shit, I read elsewhere that Obama is currently tied with Romney in Missouri. If that is true, Romney's campaign is in deep, deep shit.

(26,060 posts)which has a 15% approval rating. The people know who is keeping anything from getting done. The only people raving about this are right wing loons who would be happy to have this policy if only it weren't President Obama doing it. And I'm sure the campaign has a very nice ad using the pubs words against them on this issue. Net positive for the President.
As for the future, if there is anything the American public has proved, it's that they have very short memories.

(24,438 posts)Of course, it's not like Congress was doing (or going to do) anything about it either. Of course, they could always hold a vote on the matter if they want to. The GOP blocked DREAM Act back in 2010, which (I believe) would have done the same thing).

(32,324 posts)Democrats want unlimited immigration on account of the voters it will add to the Party. And the Republicans like the cheap labor.
Where's the evidence for the claim that "Democrats want unlimited immigration?" That claim coupled with the assertion that immigrants would be Democrats sounds like something my crazy RW brother would say (just this morning he was frothing on Facebook about Obama the "dictator" and segued into a rant about opposition to hyper-restrictive voter ID laws)...
truedelphi
(32,324 posts)The point is, no one addresses the issue. And the people who suffer the burden that unlimited immigration poses are the dwindling middle incomed.
Very important fact about this issue - way back in 1993, the SF Examiner sent one of their most liberal reporters out to investigate life and attitudes among people in California's Central Valley. He found out that overall, people were against an open border policy, something like 2 out of 3.
That might not be so surprising except for the fact that the people with whom he had this discussion were named Hernandez, Chung, Lum, Ngyuen, Rodriguez, and so on.
In other words, people who have ben immigrants themselves understand that if a nation lets in every single person who wants to come here, we end up becoming exactly like the thrid world places the people have left. One billion people live south of the border. If only 20 percent want to come here, we have to ask ourselves: what do we do with 200 million people?

(11,464 posts)once they are citizens, then you tax them
Have all these new citizens (and most of them already work) but now if they work legally, you
get hundreds of millions of new tax dollars which solves all the defecit problems and saves
social security for another 150 years and all the other things.
Plus, i surely want the immigrant who will discover a cure for alzheimer's or some other major disease.
Unless one is a native american indian, we are all immigrants.
truedelphi
(32,324 posts)Doesn't address - that is, the double standard that exists.
The immigrants have the "right" to hire only their family members, or associates, while Americans of white and black skin color MUST hire the immigrants.
I just lost yet another friend to the "white flight" so common here in California.
She was both a dental hygenist and a dental practice Administrator - familiar with all the paper work that goes into making a successful dental practice.
She has to compete with dental hygienists who speak Chinese or Vietnamese, the more favored language spoken among the dentists in many dental office in the San Francisco area.
She finally left to seek her career prospects back in the Midwest, where there is not such a huge problem about being white and mainly English speaking. (In San Francisco area, not being of color or of immigrant status is actually somewhat of a disability.)

(42,770 posts)in cases like when Bush and Cheney purposely scared the shit out of people about Al Qaeda to
get reelected in 2004. I lived through this in DC when they leaked Al Queda drawings of
MY subway station one morning and then one hour into work they evacuated out building.
I will never get that year of my life they scared out of me that day. Only to find out on
the news that evening that the drawings were three years old. (still serious of course, but
the Bush/Cheney WH wanted us all to believe that there were bombs there that day.
