In a statement Friday, former Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley defended sanctuary cities in the aftermath of the death of Kate Steinle, who was murdered in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant who was deported five times previously.
Its lamentable that the senseless and tragic act of violence that occurred in San Francisco is prompting a rush to judgment and finger pointing: we can and should do better, OMalley said in the statement.
Local governments should not be blamed for the Federal Governments inability to fix our broken immigration system nor should they be held responsible for doing the Federal Governments job, he added.
OMalley, whos currently one of the five Democrats seeking the 2016 party nomination, also released the statement in Spanish:
Es lamentable que la tragedia que ocurrió en San Francisco, un acto de violencia sin sentido, esta provocando a algunos a buscar chivos expiatorios: podemos y debemos actuar de una manera mas responsable. Los gobiernos locales no tienen la culpa de que el Gobierno Federal no ha logrado arreglar nuestro sistema migratorio, ni tienen la responsabilidad de hacer el trabajo del Gobierno Federal.
OMalleys stance contrasts with that of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who told CNN Tuesday that the city of San Francisco made a mistake in not deporting Francisco Sanchez, who fatally shot Steinle last week.

(6,241 posts)before releasing a felon that has completed his sentence? "Hey, we got his guy with like 8 priors. Can you come get him out of here please?" I don't mind someone coming here and working to improve their lives. But cities should distinguish between those people, and criminals.

(27,310 posts)for violating the 4th amendment.
And those felony convictions were mostly coming back into the U.S. If you are on welfare and make a bit of side money baby sitting, or taking in laundry, or braiding hair and don't report it
that is three felony charges right there.

(31,828 posts)The Federal government has been at best wishy washy and standing around navel gazing. If cities, towns and boroughs can ease the situation locally - its for the best. If those people in the legislative branches can't come up with a workable solution -
We have to step in because their incompetence helps no one.
Ditto our state houses - if I waited for Trenton lead by Christie to do anything of value - nothing would ever get done.

(52,164 posts)but on this particular case, San Francisco messed up here. It is one thing to say we aren't going to refer undocumented aliens to the federal government for deportation when they commit minor offenses and quite another to request that an undocumented alien come to your county to deal with a legal issue and let him go into your community. The first is quite acceptable, the second is not.
