2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJake Tapper just implied Hillary is mean to the Republicans
Hillary said that the positions of the Republican candidates for president toward undocumented workers goes from "hostility to begrudging acceptance." Jake Tapper said that Jeb Bush can't be accused of "begrudging acceptance" because his wife is Latino...HRC was referring to Republican presidential candidate's positions toward undocumented workers not Latinos who have been here for thirty years and met their spouses in college.

(14,177 posts)I would like it better if she didn't take shots at Democrats. It's not like there is a terribly wide gap in the philosophy of Hillary and Bernie. But, if you are talking actual policy advocacy, I like Bernie better.

(15,859 posts)Still, Clinton has upset immigrant advocates in the past with other statements shes made on immigration. When asked what to do with the influx of Latin American migrant children through the southern U.S. border last year, Clinton said that the kids should be sent back and that the U.S. should send a clear message. She said, just because your child gets across the border, that doesnt mean the child gets to stay. DREAMers, or undocumented immigrants who came to the country as youths, said last October that Clinton copped out from answering questions about whether she would push the President to grant administrative deportation relief for undocumented immigrants.

(15,859 posts)My question was re: Hillarys statements. It has nothing to do with her popularity within the Latino population. And certainly nothing to do with telling anyone what to do.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)I suspect they are aware of her and her relationship to their community and generally like her. I don't feel I have the standing to question their affinity.

(15,859 posts)We'll just note that a year ago Hillary was all for deporting undocumented children. You've successfully avoided that point, which was my *only* point, in full. I hope she will have a better explanation than "but Latinos like me anyway". That argument is more than a little weak.

(99,710 posts)I am not going to parse everything a candidate says and will leave it to those who are most affected by what any candidate says to render judgment.
I will say that immigration isn't an academic issue to me as I have close friends who are without documents and I trust Secretary Of State Clinton to do right by them.
bunnies
(15,859 posts)I respect that you trust HRC on the issue. Im just trying to understand why she would say something like that if she (apparently?) didnt mean it. Honestly, I have a difficult time trusting SoS Clinton, largely because of contradictions like this instance. Not being Latino, I can only see this issue through my eyes and would never tell anyone who they should vote for. As a woman, it drives me *nuts* when someone tries to tell me who is best for me because of my gender. I would certainly never try to make anyone else feel that way.
And I hope you're right about her. I really do.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)The parents sent their children to America so they can have a better life...That's laudable...But are they really better off here or with their parents? Is that something we want to encourage? To me that's not so cut and dried.
And it's also very different from the plight of most undocumented workers who aren't separated from their families.

(15,859 posts)I'm not sure what my 'easy answer' would be if I had to come up with one. Perhaps I judged her to harshly on this one. Im open to being wrong.
