2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTesting a new procedure for alerts and jury duty
Last edited Tue Jul 7, 2015, 02:18 PM - Edit history (1)
During the testing phase, we ask you to do the following:
Before you hit that "alert" button, drink a glass of wine, do a shot, take a toke or eat a special brownie.
If you receive a jury alert, before you vote and comment, drink a glass of wine, do a shot, take a toke or eat a special brownie.
We'll be testing this throughout the primaries. Please help out in this test.
Thank you,
Me and a friend here
On edit: perhaps some people need to use this procedure before hitting "send mail" too.
leveymg
(36,418 posts)And, is that procedure still mandatory for those selected for DU juries?
I don't think most people are doing this right now.
Yes, if you are selected for a jury, this procedure should be followed
hollysmom
(5,946 posts)being on a jury here is driving me to drink. Some of the alerts are just vengeance, Ridiculous. Others are alerted by people who can't read, I mean sometimes it is justified, but most times - not.
marym625
(17,997 posts)I am just trying to get people to laugh. To chill. I agree on the the juries I'm on.
hollysmom
(5,946 posts)not like what was said to them after they themselves had just been rude to the person reported on, I was so - ugh, - disgusted in the immaturity. You helped me blow off steam.
marym625
(17,997 posts)See how much better it will be to join in the testing phase?

(14,524 posts)...drink a glass of wine, take a toke, and eat a special brownie?
marym625
(17,997 posts)Even better!
You should always toke before you drink to avoid the spins.

I thought you can only be called once every 12 hours or so?
bigtree
(85,996 posts)It's easy to make fun and light of the problems with the jury system when it's not affecting you or your political group. A poster yesterday remarked to another poster that "everything sails completely over your head" and had his post locked by the jury.
The jury system here at DU is seriously flawed, to have a remark as innocuous as that one threaten a member's participation here.
marym625
(17,997 posts)I am not aiming this at anyone at all. It is not personal.
bigtree
(85,996 posts)...notwithstanding your obvious good intentions, Mary.
Still, I may just be a little sore.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)She was trying to use humor to make a good point. Think before you post. Walk out of the room and cool down before you respond to something that makes you angry. Stop and re-read what you are upset about and see if maybe you misread it, or are taking something personally that was not aimed at you. Maybe even sleep on it.
There are so many reasons fights get started here, and most of them could be completely avoided if people weren't so uptight and ready to fight to begin with.
I do think we should leave alcohol out of these new rules though...lots of people get feisty on alcohol. Toking is a much better way to calm down and just laugh at yourself and the world around you. Maybe taking a walk or meditating might help. Or just go have some sex.
Maybe there should be penalties for someone who alerts too often for questionable posts. You know, in the real world, if you call the cops out for something false, you might even go to jail or have to pay a fine for it.
bigtree
(85,996 posts)...there is a real and pressing issue behind the concern over DU juries which isn't at all amusing to me - on any level.
I don't know why you assume people are acting out of unwarranted or pure emotion. I regard most of what is posted here as sincere; a lot of it calculated and deliberate.
I don't agree at all with minimizing what's occurring with the juries. Like I said, if it doesn't affect you, if you've been censored for something critical about a candidate, but a innocuous as the example I related above, I'd imagine you'd take a different view.
marym625
(17,997 posts)It's possible to find humor in something you have no control over. We can't change the jury system. That's been made obvious. We can't control others. Also obvious. I am asking people to control themselves and to not take everything so seriously.
As far as people who are now on a vacation because of stupid hides, it sucks. And it's all across the board. Cali had at least a couple ridiculous hides. 1SBM had a couple ridiculous hides. Obviously, there are more.
People need to chill the fuck out. Before they alert and when they vote. Saying take a toke before you alert seemed much better than chill the fuck out
Fuddnik
(8,846 posts)I got spanked a few times a few years ago for posting on vodka.
marym625
(17,997 posts)You are an adult, you drop what you want
I want to know how anyone knew you had been drinking vodka. Was the brand mentioned? Would it have been OK if it was Patron and not vodka?
These are very important questions!
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)is that this was a plea to stop alerting on stuff that doesn't deserve an alert. LIke the one you referred to. Instead of yelling at people, MaryM was just trying to reach them with humor. A much better way to calm things down than yelling and reprimands.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)Nobody is going to change any minds (I don't believe) at this point.
It's pretty easy to not get a hide. Don't insult (or imply) that others are lacking in intelligence. Walk away, log out, or join real life. It's pretty much what I have done. I sometimes don't even log in. I'm busy with getting Sanders stuff together. People are still hungry, how about people give a thought to their local food pantry.
This place is great, but it is NOT life or death.
The jury system is what it is.
marym625
(17,997 posts)That's a great idea!
Thank you.
marym625
(17,997 posts)And ridiculous hides. They're all over the place. I wish the alert button was gone. Then no one could complain about the jury process, censorship, "alert stalking" etc. You don't like something, ignore it or say so to the person.
Hence the get relaxed before you do anything post.
Yes, my intentions were to make people laugh and hopefully stop the alerts. I would say 95% of the juries I'm on, the alert shouldn't have happened. Including an alert on the host of a group, on their post in that group.
So that's all this is. We all need to chill.
marym625
(17,997 posts)That's the whole point of my post.

marym625
(17,997 posts)Good! So we're on the same page. Thanks!
virtualobserver
(8,760 posts)There are people on juries who print out the results
and then criticize the response of individual jurors.
I've even seen people demanding that someone be banned
from DU based on their vote on a jury.
Once I saw that, I turned off the jury option.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)Some take this way, way too seriously.
I don't make any comment on my decision, if I am called. If I find the alert silly - then that is all I will say.
Fla Dem
(23,677 posts)Jurors are anonymous. So how could anyone demand a juror be banned?
virtualobserver
(8,760 posts)what I said was
"I've even seen people demanding that someone be banned
from DU based on their vote on a jury"
They demanded that in a thread in which they printed out the vote.
I saw this occur more than once.

tularetom
(23,664 posts)I've been here ten years and to the best of my recollection I've alerted on just one post and that one was a no brainer involving the n-word.
I take a pretty liberal approach to posting, and I have no intention to start alerting just because I don't agree with the content of a post, or even with the attitude displayed by the poster.
But I agree whole heartedly with the idea of ingesting a mind altering substance before alerting.
In fact, I may carry it one step further and do it before posting. I finished off a can of beer before I posted this.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Awesome! Thanks!
tularetom
(23,664 posts)But I've posted twice since then, and I'll be 74 in a couple months and I think my bladder is 110.
So I may have to rethink my original idea or it's gonna be drink-post-pee the rest of the day.
It's a great idea. Was then, is now. If you have to pee between posts, it's all good!
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)in part because I noticed that my vote almost never matched the other four. If I'm that much out of step, I thought, I don't belong on a DU jury.
But recent jury results have made me wonder if some significant portion of DU has opted out, leaving jury duty to a relatively small group who are now out of step with everyone else. Maybe I should return to jury eligibility and see what happens.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Just following the testing phase procedures and it should all be good!
Thanks!

(23,156 posts)and sincerely hope they bring about a more tolerant and happy DU.

(57,097 posts)prior contact with any other juryists I find I agree with 90% of the results. I don't see how anyone fixes jury results. Over alerting on someone like 1strongblackman has to be able to be proven by who is repeatedly alerting and how many alerts get laughed out. This is something I am sure admin could look into if it isn't already being done now.
marym625
(17,997 posts)And who is alerted on often.
I agree that saying anyone can stack a jury seems HIGHLY unlikely. And I usually agree with most other jurors as well.
There are plenty of hidden posts, all over the place, that shouldn't be IMHO. But we can't do anything about the jury system than not alert at the drop of a hat, and don't hide unless truly egregious.

(57,097 posts)someone. I was on MIRTfor two terms and found I agreed with 80% of hides and denial of service.
Of all the forums I've been on since Abuzz before Sept 11, this place seems the safest and most civil. I sorta wish the rules on who can post here were a little more open but this is Democratic Underground, not Progressive Underground.
I can live with that in return that we can be relatively troll free.
marym625

No sarcasm. I think MIRT is awesome!

(17,997 posts)It's practically legal here. Won't be long. Small amount gets you a ticket and medical is legal, they're just figuring out the logistics and diseases it can be prescribed for.
But, I'm moving to California. Funny, I am moving because I need a job. Just saw a post that the Illinois is in the top 5 places to work and California is in the bottom 5. Go figure!
I have never been to Portland but really want to go. Hope they make it fully legal before Washington gets all the profits!

What an excellent idea. I have served on a few juries lately. Perhaps some here suffer from "premature eruption" of anger, so to speak.
May I add, before one posts anything with the title "HRC/Sanders/O'Malley/ better watch out" or "new polling shows that HRC/Sanders/O'Malley is in trouble" remember that the election is not until November of NEXT YEAR. A lot will happen between July 2015 and November 2016.
Again, great idea marym.

(31,893 posts)People need to stop being so uptight with their fellow DUers!
Whether you like a particular poster or not, we're all in this together - we are all being screwed over by the same forces, and it ain't our fellow DUers!
It's not that hard to just leave someone be if you don't agree with them. You don't have to challenge them, you can just click on a different thread. And for goshsakes don't friggin' alert on them! That's just cowardly backstabbing!
I totally agree with your premise - just chill out with the mind-altering substance of your choice. Instead of reaching for the damn 'alert' button, reach for a brewski or a doobie or a nice piece of dark chocolate. Raise your endophin level, be nice, be compassionate, be kind.

Attack the supporters of any candidate posting on DU? Complain about those supporters? No.
