Did Hillary or Bernie work harder on Progressive and Social Bills and Amendments?

Last edited Tue Jul 7, 2015, 04:07 PM - Edit history (1)

I counted sponsored or co-sponsored Bills and Amendments:

Hillary: 72 (this includes a very big break of almost 6 months for her last POTUS bid)
Bernie: 15

A claim was made on this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/1251428771#post1 that Hillary says she works harder than anyone on progressive issues. Was she correct? Well not according to the people responding...and of course many are responding without all of the facts. I thought it may be interesting to come up with some actual facts.

I made some assumptions:
1. Those responding on the thread were comparing Hillary to Bernie
2. I should try and compare similar Senate & House terms. I researched from Jan, 2001 to March 2008.
3. By working hard on issues, I assume this doesn't mean just voting, it should mean actual work in sponsoring or co-sponsoring bills.

I used this site as a reference: http://votesmart.org/officials non partisan and posting data and numbers only.

Then just for further clarification regarding Hillary and Bernie's sponsor or co-sponsorships issues, I went back through those sponsored and co sponsored bills to find and list those bills that addressed more progressive & social issues.

Hillary
-Campaign Reform
-Registration by mail
-Greater access to affordable pharmaceuticals
-Hate crimes
-Equal protection of voting rights
-Resolution condemning the abuse of Iraqi prisoners
-Unemployment Benefits (twice)
-Victims Rights Bill
-Unintended Pregnancy Bill
-Minimum wage (twice)
-Hurricane Health care for survivors
-Bill to stop increases on Medicare B premiums, Reduce payments
-Individuals with disabilities Education
-Low income home energy (twice)
-Pell grant increases
-Education funding
-LIHEAP funding
-Medicare drug prescription benefits
-Price gouging during emergencies
-Stem Cell Research
-Teen pregnancy education
-Grants and scholarships for medical education for American Indians
-Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
- Vote to adopt an amendment that establishes a system for providing states with financial aid to offset the health care and educational costs incurred by giving aid to immigrants.

Bernie

-Stem Cell Research Act (twice)
-Voting Rights re-authorization Act
-Import of prescription drugs Bill
-Cloning of humans Bill
-Help American Vote

Hillary seems to be able to back up her statement

“I take a backseat to no one when you look at my record in standing up and fighting for progressive values,”
One more reason Hillary is a great candidate. She doesn't just do the talk, she actually does the work.

If that is true, why did you leave out MOST of his record? You do know he's been in politics for decades now, don't you. This post I'm replying to is proof that you have no use for facts, your OP is just an attempt at a 'gotcha'.

Bernie marched for civil rights in the 60's, even got arrested over the issue, and has been fighting for EVERYONE'S rights consistently since then. His record is stellar on equality for ALL as well as on economic issues.

And again, how do we know you've 'found' everything? Especially when you post something so disingenuous as "Bernie do so much talking and so little action is not my problem". You KNOW that's not true.

It's one thing to post facts, it's quite another to try and fabricate something based on some arbitrary criteria that you have chosen in order to try to slant things to your liking.

69. In order for the number of bills to seem like a lot or not, there needed to be a comparison
Tue Jul 7, 2015, 07:17 PM
Jul 2015

on another thread, Clinton had been hammered for stating that she worked very harder on progressive and social issues than any other candidate.

So I set out to see if this were the case. I decided NOT to simply use votes, any dummy can vote. I wanted to use a criteria that more described "work". The site delineated bills and amendments that were sponsored and co-sponsored. That seemed like it involved much more work...so though it would be a good indicator to use.. I had to compare Hillary's sponsored bills with another candidate. Bernie seemed like the logical choice for here on DU.

I realize Bernie marched 50 years ago. My issue is that I don't believe that has translated into civil rights bills sponsored by Bernie.

As for how do you know if I got everything? *sigh* one more time. I gave you the link. This is not a Dem site. Its putely a data collection site listing 40,000 candidates and their voting and sponsorhip records. I looked at Bernie and Clinton for a similar time period in both Houses, so that there could be some level of comparison.

Clearly you didn't like that this independent site listed the sponsored and Co-Sponsored bills. Further down thread, I was told that I should have compared time when they were both in the Senate. I did that....it was still a 2:1 number in favor of Hillary. I didn't fabricate a single solitary thing. You just don't like the numbers.

Full Title
A bill to phase out the use of private military contractors.

Nor was his anti-sweatshop bill ...

http://www.globallabourrights.org/alerts/anti-sweatshop-legislation-re-introduced-in-the-senate-and-house

For the first time, anti-sweatshop legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Congress which will prohibit the import, export or sale of sweatshop goods in the U.S. Up to this point, it has been the companies that have demanded and won all sorts of enforceable laws--intellectual property and copyright laws backed up by sanctions--to defend their corporate trademarks, labels and products. Yet, the corporations have long said that extending similar laws to protect the human rights of the 16-year-old girl in Bangladesh who sews the garment would be "an impediment to free trade." Under this distorted sense of values, the label is protected, but not the human being, the worker who makes the product.

On January 23, 2007, Senator Byron Dorgan along with co-sponsoring Senators Lindsey Graham, Sherrod Brown, Bernie Sanders, Russell Feingold and Robert Byrd re-introduced the "Decent Working Conditions and Fair Competition Act" which, when passed will prohibit the import, export or sale of sweatshop goods in the U.S. A companion bill introduced in the House last year had 66 co-sponsors.

I'm almost surprised Hillary's flag burning prohibition bill didn't make your list.

16. Politics are economics
Tue Jul 7, 2015, 02:05 PM
Jul 2015

The most egregious attacks upon our citizenry have occurred due to the greed of the very very wealthy and their influence over our government- by this I mean Billionaires, Banks, Wall Street, and large corporations. With most democrats, each one of the above liberal bills becomes something to show their base they are for the little guy without ever challenging the power structure that currently exists. Every issue becomes a way for a democrat to look like a good guy, but in reality until they change the tax code to raise taxes on the rich, fight global climate change, and provide truly affordable health care, they just keep the rich getting richer and us getting poorer. While I and Bernie too support these efforts by Hillary to reduce some of the inequities of the current system and provide some improvement to the social safety net, until she comes out for higher taxes on the rich and closing of loopholes for them, she is liberal but certainly not progressive. I know the media likes to call this populism but the income tax system of this country is supposed to be progressive in that regard and if she has not took a stand and proposed a solution on the economic issues that matter most to the well being of the 99 percent of our people, I can concede she is liberal but progressive- no! Her attempts to conflate the terms do not hold and while progressives are usually liberal on social issues, progressivism demands a progressive stance foremost on economics and most progressives feel her ties to Wall Street etc. do not permit her to express or hold these views.

Women are not paid equally as men....is the reason social oreconomic justice. More black people are incarcerated and on death row...is that an ecomonic or a social justice. Once we view all people as being equal, once they are all judged equally , they will be placed at the same economic bands.

Pure economic justice, the rich getting richer while the middle class and poor languish in stangnant wages is a separate issue and by all means needs to be addressed...that is a separate thread.

a few amendments to existing bill can drastically change the character and the impact of a bill. Most amendments are to offer clarification and to correct typos.

Getting an amendment accepted into a bill or voted to be added to a bill. Many very big things pass as amendments.

One important Bernie amendment into the ACA was a provision for some community health centers. This is one of the most progressive provisions of the bill. In fact, Teresa Kerry listed it as one of the best things in the bill.

A) Hillary Clinton was the most famous Democrat in the Senate with the powerful pull of her connections and a former husband president. So having her name on a bill gave it clout.

B) Bernie Sanders became a US Senator in 2007. So you are comparing her entire tenure to his first year.

I limited sponsor and co sposored bills only (not votes) from 2001 to 2008 When both Hillary and Bernie were in the House. Of those co sponsored bills, very very very few related to social issues...those were the ones I pointed out for both candidates.

This is so dishonest it is mind blowing. Sanders has introduced--not just co-sponsored--350 bills in his time in Congress. If you would like me to put them all here I can.

You have completely left out all the bills for helping low income, Social Security, climate change, Single Payer, the list goes on and on.

EVERY time you post dishonest information, it only points out how much STRONGER Sanders credentials are than your candidate's. But keep going, it's brilliant.

there were not 350 bills sponsored or co sponsored....not even close. As has been shown throughout this thread, maybe you are looking at vote counts? I was establishing actual work done...work on behalf of social injustices. Votes come too easy, I wanted to see what WORK those two candidates did and was establishing that by looking at sponsored and co-sponsored bills and amendments. Bernie seems to talk a lot though, I'll give you that.

You are comparing a SENATOR (Clinton), one of 100, to a Representative (Sanders until 2007). The power structure is entirely different. By leaving out all the years of Sanders work in the Senate, you have purposely left out the bulk of the bills he has introduced. He is introducing bills RIGHT NOW to match his campaign proposals.

Here is a second link with a list of all the bills he introduced (I put another source above in this thread). So if you think that we are going to pit number of bills

Sponsored: 315
Co-Sponsored: 4,158

https://www.congress.gov/member/bernard-sanders/S000033?pageSize=250&q=%7B%22type%22%3A%22bills%22%7D

64. 80% of your list isn't even in the correct time periods we are comparing
Tue Jul 7, 2015, 06:03 PM
Jul 2015

You want to compare Bernie sponsored and introduced bills in 2012, 2013 and 2014 etc to what Hillary's co sponsored bills were in that same time period? When she wasn't even an elected official? Really?

In addition, your list include introduced bills.... Throwing the whole bowl of spaghetti against the wall and hoping something sticks isn't where I was going.

Using the link I gave in the OP and using the delineated time period for each candidate, you can clearly see where I got my info.

67. Your paremeters create a meaningless comparison. Why would work Sanders did only be important
Tue Jul 7, 2015, 06:49 PM
Jul 2015

if it occurred while Hilary was also serving in the legislative branch? It is only important to your comparison, which is quite pointless when crediting what each has done in their attempts to further progressive causes.

68. nope.....they were not meaningless except for those that didn't like the numbers
Tue Jul 7, 2015, 07:01 PM
Jul 2015

as it applied to Bernie, and that is understandable.

Bernie records do indicate that he has been very big on talk...with little actual action. If he has stepped up to the plate in 2014-2015 as some have suggested, then it's about time.

70. Lol. As I said, meaningless in terms of a getting a comprehensive picture of what each has done.

Jul 2015

You only want to acknowledge an arbitrarily limited scope of the totality of the records, which, by definition, results in a limited assessment of both candidates.

You may be happy to evaluate something based on incomplete information, but that's your problem.

we could use post #17?
On a different neutral website, Hillary is rated higher for leadership and effectiveness...
that's without looking at specific bills.

76. You can't compare House and Senate records
Wed Jul 8, 2015, 01:09 PM
Jul 2015

I'm currently detailed to the staff of a Dem congressman right now, and I can see this up close. Both the culture and the rules of the Senate make it a LOT easier for minority members to accomplish something in that chamber than it is for minority members to accomplish something in the House (especially minority Dems, since the GOP governs via the Hastert Rule).

79. Yep. I wasn't dismissing the analysis

Jul 2015

I just think it's important to understand how very different House and Senate records can be, and why; it's not always evident to casual observers.

I merely attempted to incorporate a significant time line thinking it would avoid calls that I cherry picked just one year. Seems like post #17 above is a better clarification.
