Presidential candidate Lincoln Chafee stands before a few dozen people at a meeting of New Hampshire's Belknap County Democrats. The Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat gets nods of approval when he tells them he was the only Republican senator to vote against authorizing the war in Iraq.
Then smiles turn to laughter when he pitches another idea: The U.S. should switch to the metric system.
The former Rhode Island governor has visited the first primary state of New Hampshire a dozen times this year. But he seems to be making barely a ripple aside from curiosity about some of his policy platforms.
In Belknap County, at least some Democrats seemed intrigued by Chafee as someone who could represent an alternative to Hillary Rodham Clinton, the commanding favorite for the nomination. But they are also puzzled by what he talks about sometimes.

(14,177 posts)It's a no brainer. I use the metric system in art, it's easier to be precise. However, it's not a campaign issue.

from wikipedia:
Chafee opposes the death penalty, and has consistently voted against limiting death penalty appeals in federal cases. He has also favored including racial statistics in death penalty appeals, and making DNA analysis a prerequisite for any federal-level, criminal executions.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island took a principled position when he refused an order from a federal court to transfer a prisoner to federal custody for prosecution because that would expose the prisoner to the death penalty. As Mr. Chafee said in a statement, that is a penalty consciously rejected by the State of Rhode Island, even for those guilty of the most heinous crimes.

Chafee disappointed Tsarnaev sentenced to death
...
I was disappointed, Chafee told WPRI.com in a one-on-one interview Friday afternoon. Even some family members of victims had advocated to spare Tsarnaev, and I thought that was powerful testimony.
Chafee described the Marathon bombing as a horrendous crime and said he has sympathy for the victims and their families, but reiterated that he doesnt support putting anyone to death, particularly in this case
