Thursday, June 18, 2015
WASHINTON, June 18 Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement today after the House, in an about face, revived a bill to give President Barack Obama authority to send Congress trade agreements it can reject or ratify but not change:
I am extremely disappointed but not surprised that the House put the interests of powerful multi-national corporations, drug companies and Wall Street ahead of the needs of American workers.
I will work to defeat the measure once and for all when the bill returns to the Senate. This disastrous trade deal is opposed by all of organized labor in America, virtually every environmental group in the country and many religious groups. They all know that it will make it easier for corporations to abandon the United States and move good-paying American jobs to low-wage countries overseas.
I believe that trade is good but we need a new approach that benefits the working families and not just corporate America.

(17,045 posts)Every rep who voted for TPA should have to do Cersei Lannister's walk of atonement all the way from Washington D.C. back to where they came from. I will walk behind them with the fucking bell.
I couldn't find it.

(18,791 posts)What the fuck Obama?
You send the Senate this pile of shit...and if the majority approve it...well, I will have lost all respect for you. And to think I actually worked hard, locally to get you in office.
Never again.

(3,859 posts)I feel encouraged when I see people who are willing to admit they were wrong! We are lucky because this time we have the real deal. He is that rare presidential candidate who doesn't lie. Gore was the closest thing to a truth teller I can remember before that. I think Jimmy Carter and RFK were pretty close.

(1,615 posts)we knew coming into it that he was a bit of a mystery, and his election would be primarily symbolic. I think he's done a better-than-average job considering. a clinton democrat, but, then again, clinton wasn't a awful president either.
of course, they are both wrong on trade and we should continue to oppose them on this issue.

(3,859 posts)But their neoliberalism is repugnant to me. Not just the trade deals, but Arne Duncan and his privatization philiosophy, lobbyists becoming regulators, etc. While I agree they could have been a lot worse, Bernie will be so much better. His record is incredibly strong.
Prior to Bernie, I believed in Gore and RFK. I now have some mixed feelings on Gore, but I still think he's a great man. So, I don't feel easily deceived and to me Bernie is a once in a generation type.

(1,615 posts)I think obama has some legitimate claim due to talent, etc, but a lot of the people who are running for prez seem to be doing so because were born into that class. for example the bush brothers.
anyhow, it seems strange and maybe a bit illogical to put all that hope and faith and trust into a single person.

(1,253 posts)And what EXACTLY is her position on the TPP? Not Nancy Pelosi's. What is HRCs position on this, for or against?

(11,197 posts)as Secretary of State, Hillary had a hand in helping to DRAFT the TPP. This was according to Bloomberg News in 2013 who listed it, at the time, as a major achievement for her.

(30,099 posts)I agree. We need to work hard and hope all of us together can help support him and win this time...for the people.

(54,770 posts)I don't think you avoid trade in this rapidly changing world, while you talk about an approach benefiting workers.
You do big trade deals, so you aren't behind the curve, and tax, and otherwise use some of, the money generated to protect, help, improve life for workers.
rbnyc
(17,045 posts)Fast tracking this agreement and doing nothing aren't the only two choices.
As far as we can tell the bulk of this agreement isn't even about trade. It's about making people powerless.
TPP insiders: We promise we won't rape you, but let us just handcuff you to the bed.
The people: No, we need to renegotiate the terms of our relationship.
Hoyt: You can't just avoid being in a relationship. Let yourself be handcuffed to the bed and then try to make the best of it.

(51,907 posts)--set over elected governments. If any of our so-called "representatives" cared about actual trade, they just would have pulled the 5 of 29 sections that relate to trade and voted to pass only those.

(160 posts)Here in Florida, Wasserman-Schultz voted yes on this corporate give away. It is important to remember that she is a HUGE supporter of HRC. That and Hillary's silence on TPP speaks volumes.
