BY JUDD LEGUM
On December 19, 1998, the House of Representatives impeached Bill Clinton on two charges related to his extramarital affair with Monica Lewinsky. (The charges were for perjury and obstruction of justice.) The historic vote, and subsequent trial in the Senate, involved the work of three men who were elected Speaker of the House Of Representatives by the Republican majority, Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston and Dennis Hastert.
Almost 17 years later, with the federal indictment of Hastert for illegally concealing up to $3.5 million in hush-money, we finally have a more complete understanding of the men who led this effort.
Newt Gingrich
Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) led the push for Bill Clintons impeachment. Following a disappointing election in November 1998, he announced he was stepping down as Speaker and resigning from Congress.
Gingrich later admitted that, while he was pushing for Clintons impeachment, he was engaged in an affair with a Congressional aide. There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them, Gingrich said in 2007. He later said the situation was complex and, obviously, I wasnt doing things to be proud of.

(5,829 posts)Had blow jobs in White House been something they could impeach for, they would have. Major hypocracy. But their partisan hatred made Clinton think he had to lie. Mistake, since that's what led to impeachment.

(36,827 posts)There was never any legal case against Clinton. He was never so much as indicted for any criminal charges.

Fellowship, stated on The Rachel Maddow Show that C Street is a "luxury place" with a cook, dining room used for formal banquets, and common space "to hang out, to talk policy, to watch sports," adding that female interns act as unpaid maids and that male volunteers for the Fellowship, including himself when he was an intern, are expected to be a "servant for these congressmen."[21]

(17,217 posts)... whatever one may think about the authority of the Grand Jury system (and I think it is pretty bad, as it happens), I still become a little annoyed when an individual decides that he is not subject to the law as everyone else is. Of course, this is a trait in virtually every politician regardless of stripe, but I don't see that that makes it therefore okay. The smug, self-satisfied way our privileged classes evade and obfuscate any and all responsibility for just about anything really frosts my flakes. But hey, I'm an anarchist and a Leveller.
