(1,787 posts)there is a brokered convention. Some radical candidates (Cruz) have no chance in hell in a regular convention but given a chaotic environment, the nut could actually come out ahead.
Either way, it will be very entertaining.

(26,549 posts)Citizens United. Great thing for the party that represents "money", right?
Nope.
You used to have to line up significant party support to enter the race. That meant vetted candidates that were not crazy - there was effectively one or two candidates backed by significant money, and the fringe.
Now? All you have to line up is one billionaire. Or a handful of millionaires. Even Trump can pull that off. So now the fringe is front-and-center, crowding out the sane candidates.
CU is still awful, and causes all sorts of problems in smaller scale races like the House, statehouses and governors. But for president, it is disastrous.

(1,683 posts)My first recollection were the 1952 conventions when I was 13.
State delegates would arrive pledged to the "favorite son" who was the governor or one of the senators.
Slowly a band wagon would begin to roll and gather steam as the favorite sons released their delegates after brokered deals.
The talking heads would be yakking based on rumors and insider releases.
I don't even watch conventions any more as they are just coronations.

(22,000 posts)in May of next year the nominee for our party is decided, then I may switch and vote for the worst Republican candidate I can find and switch back for the GE. Give the Republicans a little taste of their own medicine.
