The leader of the Federal Election Commission, the agency charged with regulating the way political money is raised and spent, says she has largely given up hope of reining in abuses in the 2016 presidential campaign, which could generate a record $10 billion in spending.
The likelihood of the laws being enforced is slim, Ann M. Ravel, the chairwoman, said in an interview. I never want to give up, but Im not under any illusions. People think the F.E.C. is dysfunctional. Its worse than dysfunctional.
Her unusually frank assessment reflects a worsening stalemate among the agencys six commissioners. They are perpetually locked in 3-to-3 ties along party lines on key votes because of a fundamental disagreement over the mandate of the commission, which was created 40 years ago in response to the political corruption of Watergate.
(snip)
Whats really going on, she said, is that the Republican commissioners dont want to enforce the law, except in the most obvious cases. The rules arent being followed, and thats destructive to the political process.

(22,000 posts)that will enforce the laws. The Republicans are going to have a field day getting around the laws during this election cycle and there won't be anything that can be done.
I'll tell you what, if they changed the law to say that if a candidate is proven to have broken the law he or she (the candidate) has to be caned in public they might think twice about pulling this shit.
