Wisconsin governor plans no press conferences in the UK and his handlers aren't allowing reporters to interview himDaily Mail Online asked his press secretary, Laurel Patrick, about interview opportunities and press conferences; she said neither would occur. 'Unfortunately, the Governor's schedule is extremely tight,' Patrick said, 'so we will not be able to accommodate (you).'
But he did visit Margaret Thatcher's grave as well as a motorcycle dealership and will meet with David Cameron for the all important 10 Downing Street photo op on this tax payer paid campaign trip being presented as a "trade mission".
He is in so far over his head that his "handlers" won't let him talk off script...lol. At least the question period at Chatham House could be entertaining, if he isn't given the questions ahead of time. (See link below to submit questions for Walker and watch streamed event on Wednesday.)

Updated: LINK to complete video of the Chatham House event, including speech and questions from the press (evolution question is at the end).

(3,974 posts)I wish Cameron had the opportunity to take Walker to Question Time and have him experience that. I think it would blow the sheltered Walker's mind. And imagine if we had a serious form of Question Time in the US. Lightweight con men like Walker would be exposed pretty quickly.

(22,157 posts)to talk with a foreign press? He's the best the GOP has?
Cal33
(7,018 posts)masters still richer, what could he say when questioned on this point? And the press
in London won't hesitate to ask him such direct questions. Can't blame him for not
wanting to meet with them, can you?

(3,974 posts)...in any way other than tested and canned talking points. You're right- a direct question or follow up question could well be impossible for him to answer.
Since becoming governor here in Wisconsin over 4 years ago, I am not aware of a single truly "public" appearance by Walker. And certainly not one where the public was allowed to ask questions or interact with their governor in any way. He is kept in a bubble, only appearing at staged events in warehouses, at Republican closed events, and the like. What he has done to Wisconsin, and especially what he is doing to the people and institutions of Wisconsin in his current budget bill, is simply indefensible. I don't know how his handlers can keep him isolated through a presidential campaign, but then again, they got him reelected in Wisconsin without ever facing the public and only minimally facing a mostly enabling Wisconsin press.

(25,111 posts)and is scared of his own shadow. He's not gonna do well across the country. Cheating, stealing, oppression, lying is not gonna do well in the country like it did in WI.
Plus he's just as dumb as W.

(4,949 posts)Walker cannot speak ad lib, hence he cannot answer questions unscripted.
I mean, who would be pulling the jaw-string of his puppet mouth??
I'm hoping David Cameron has the balls to unmask Walker for what Walker is and is not.
Even tho Cameron is RW he should have an ounce of (Oxford) dignity to show for what is expected of him.

(51,658 posts)This is not supposed to be a vacation and campaign photo op. Walker is such an evil coward.

(3,974 posts)So no photo ops or wasted time with the press. Walker has important work to do, and it must be done secretly. The campaign has told us once and they're not going to tell us again: This is completely separate from the campaign!
But wait- if it's a "trade mission" to drum up business for Wisconsin and raise the state's profile around the world, wouldn't the "missionaries" be seeking out publicity wherever they could find it? I don't think the Walker campaign is being completely straight with us...

Time for twitter, apparently. Just not the press.

(2,474 posts)...the Koch Brothers realized that Walkers MS-DOS 1.0 foreign policy software would need extensive revisions, to work around the severe limitations imposed by the ScottBot's single 64K memory module. Until further testing is complete, Walker has been temporarily re-programmed to deny access to any and all foreign policy queries.

"Gov. Scott Walker may have picked the perfect time to get out of Wisconsin for a few days.
The prospective Republican candidate for president is traveling in the United Kingdom this week on what's officially billed as a trade mission. It's a trip that also turns the Wisconsin governor's focus toward foreign policy and away from a kerfuffle at home with the University of Wisconsin."

(3,974 posts)The Chatham House event just ended, with Walker taking questions for more than 30 minutes. He laughed off any question related to foreign policy, saying "it wouldn't be polite" to talk about foreign policy in another country because he's "old fashioned". That knocked out about half the questions. He responded to most questions with his stock speech talking points about his popular and successful policies and how Wisconsin leads the nation in this or that- I don't think anyone was impressed.
The best question of all was the last one, asked by the host. Walker was asked if he believed in evolution. He refused to answer, to the shock of everyone in attendance.

(3,974 posts)Justin Webb did an excellent job of moderating, but he couldn't help but gasp and laugh at Walker's responses several times during the event.
I could tell from his tone that the moderator was , shall we say, quite impressed with Walker, for sure
That's in fact what led me to figure that that was just the beginning, and some satisfyingly snarky media commentary was sure to follow.

(7,637 posts)that in the UK the press does not hesitate to ask difficult questions to politicians. Being a politician in the UK requires more eloquence and brains that Walker or most GOP reps could muster.
I mean, watch the "questions to the prime minister" sometimes. It can get pretty ugly in the house of commons and you can not just dodge the question, you have to think on your feet and give a coherent answer. The same thing is true when interacting with the press. If you flat out lie, they will call you on it. If you smear a political opponent using lies you will be dragged in court for libel as well.

(13,877 posts)The run up to the Iraq War brought that home as far as all of them are concerned, just as did the refusal to photograph coffins. I believe we have a de facto State-Run Media.
