2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCan anyone explain why/how the Catholics are suing the adminstration over b/c
Here's a story about the RCC groups claiming they are "persecuted" and suing the Obama administration over the birth control mandate:

Are they still living in the pre-compromise world, before the mandate was shifted from the religious employer to the (secular, for profit, corporate) insurance company?
How can they sue about something they are not required to provide?
Am I missing something?
Seriously, I'd really like somebody who knows what's going on to explain this situation.

(14,337 posts)I turned down every interview with a catholic school. 12 years of catholic schooling. They sought me out. Sorry, no. I know TOO MUCH about your religion, and your "morals" clauses, to EVER work for a catholic organization. I told my son-in-law the same. Do you want to get FIRED for using BC? Do you want to have as many children, which you cannot afford, just to please ROME? Nope.
The cathoic church is losing their faithfull, and their FUTURE parishoners. This is the real reason they are making a big deal about the BC "mandate".

(1,033 posts)Like you, I had 12 years of Catholic education. I was taught about the need to serve and help others, to care for the sick and the poor, to be selfless and giving, etc, you know, things Jesus actually taught about. Likewise, the former pastor at my parish was a relatively liberal priest. Obviously, he'd take "pro-life" positions, but he never emphasized them. Instead, he emphasized the need to help others and care for those less fortunate than you. He criticized the Vatican when it lashed out at the Roe v. Wade decision, but failed to lash out at the attack on workers' rights (this church was in a suburb of Detroit with an auto factory that employed huge numbers) He abhorred when our conservative leaders would gut the social safety net and attack and demonize the poor, etc., etc.
My teachers followed his lead and emphasized those aspects of Catholic dogma. We learned about the Church's pro-life, anti-contraception, anti-gay marriage stances, but they were not emphasized. We were taught that it was OK to criticize the Church on these issues and to form your own opinions. What was emphasized was the idea of being your brother and sister's keeper, though.
The other wing seems to be mainly those in the higher-ups of the Church. It pisses me off when I see my bishop on the local news lashing out at the Obama administration for its contraception mandate, but never going on TV to criticize the GOP's constant attacks on the poor, the elderly, the working man, etc. It's hypocrisy at its finest. Jesus said nothing about contraception, gay marriage, etc. He did speak abundantly on helping the poor and the sick, though.

(14,337 posts)Paul was more compassionate and emphasized caring for the poor. Benedict is a dictator. Not surprising coming from his Nazi background.

I have a solution. "You want to help people? That's good, because starting immediately we're going to tax you at the personal tax rate. Better get your books in order because our best IRS auditors are going to be on the case. And, yes, that includes real property. Oh! And we've eliminated the parsonage exclusion, with the exception of mean poverty support. Since you insist that this is a Christian country, you won't be surprised that we're going to insist that Christian religions adhere to Jesus' pledge of poverty. Thank you for playing, your holiness."

(28,581 posts)... they prove me wrong.
I look forward to the day that the Vatican and it's entire power structure disappear.
Catholics need to take their church back from these power hungry corrupt old men.
