I think he makes some good points here.
Just 16 per cent of whites believe there is a lot of discrimination in America today compared to 56 per cent of blacks.
Incredibly, white perceptions of anti-black bias have plummeted to the point where many think anti-white bias is a bigger problem.
. . .
But if anything, Id argue that America is now more racist than it was before Obama was elected.
Or at the very least, the angry racist minority (but still many millions of people) is more vocal enraged by the whole notion of a black man living at the White House.
Having said that, America is clearly massively less racist than it was 40 years ago. It has come a long way, very fast.
What is desperately needed now is a sustained period of calm, rational reaction on all sides to the myriad incidents that occur on a daily basis in the United States where race might be seen as an issue, even where it isnt.

(14,177 posts)I think it's a combination of racists adding numbers to their ranks and they are a lot louder now than they used to be. That's fine, I can be loud too.

(29,675 posts)Racism was just under the surface, and when Barack became President.....all the hate and venom just spewed out. Ugh.

(50,953 posts)It would be no different from comparing what has happened in the past before cable tv and social media to now. The outlets available a 50 years ago did not provide the same level of exposure as now.
Just because it appears to be more prevalent doesn't mean it is so.

(153,169 posts)I think Obama's election pushed the racists assholes that were already there more out in the open; simply put, they were no longer able to conduct themselves in a civil manner seeing a black man occupy the White House

(3,544 posts)Well said and I agree wholeheartedly.
Yes, they are out there. Always have been. And I don't blame Obama one bit. We elected our first black president, and gave him two turns at it. We all knew there would be some issues by doing so. And racism was one of them. Especially from the right. On day one, wasn't it McTurtle that said he would stop him at any cost. It started then.

Republican fox showed the 'scary' picture of 2 black men panthers? at a voting area, hundreds of times.
All of the above happened right before & during the first election.

(4,510 posts)isn't new neither is white people murdering black people and getting away with it. Problem is Obama is hesitant to address race and the racists know it and exploit it. Meanwhile black people aren't as organized as they should be politically on the local, state and national levels. That's how Ferguison happened.
