2016 Postmortem

A Des Moines Register poll published today has Bruce Braley losing by six points. If we lose that Senate race, our chances of keeping the Senate are virtually nil.
If you live in Iowa, PLEASE get out and vote!!

(19,348 posts)Also, this is the first poll to show Brailey below 40%.
That is strange.
With that said, I am all for eliminating all farm subsidies and letting the market decide.
If the rural voters want teanuts, let them live and die by their own sword.

(3,003 posts)I can't understand it. Iowa does have a lot of conservatives, but the state has almost always voted Democratic in presidential elections for the past quarter-century. What the heck is going on? Where are all the people who helped Obama carry the state two years ago?

(14,449 posts)The state usually votes Democratic in presidential elections. So I guess in 2016 the state will again vote Democratic. 2014 perhaps not. But I hope this poll is a wake up call.

(14,449 posts)He easily could have won this race had he kept a tight campaign. This was an easy win that might end up a loss.

(14,449 posts)He blasted the previous Senator for being a Farmer instead of a lawyer. Do you approve of that? Most I hear from call that elitist. However, I hope he can eek out a win. We certainly need his seat.

(22,878 posts)What he was talking about was the judiciary committee.. that Grassley who has never gone to law school could end up sitting on that committee.. Some got their noses bent out of shape.. but they would have found something else to howl at the moon about.. Most farmers I know, who have not gone to law school, may not be Democrats but understand the need for someone who has knowledge of the law to help on the judiciary..
Farmers are not stupid people.. But partisans who are farmers.. well you know the drill

Edit to add: And the name is Braley...

(22,878 posts)We have already started voting.. Once we vote, the poll people stop calling us.. so it has been really up and down here.. I am taking this one with a grain of salt, .. because we had one the other day with Braley 4 points ahead.
The Des Moines Register is a good poll. I am not knocking that by any means.. but I am not depressed about Ernst either..
We have been literally flooded with Koch money.. I can not even begin to tell you how many commericals they have put up here..
And I am in the most conservative part of the state.. and a lot of seniors here are really upset with her.. about her wanting to change Social Security.
We are getting out the vote..and this is an important election.. Iowans go to the polls.. flood them.. so there will be no voting day shenanigans..that is the one thing I worry about..

(3,003 posts)Think of all the resources we are using to hang on to our Senate seats in Iowa, Colorado, Michigan, and New Hampshire which we really need to spend defending out seats in states like North Carolina, Alaska, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
When, oh WHEN are Democratic voters going to realize that national elections are held every TWO years (not four) and that midterms are just as important as presidential elections??
Peacetrain
(22,878 posts)For what ever reason, it is hard to get our people juiced for mid term elections.. just one of those things

(22,878 posts)So we work hard to get our Democratic voters out early..and it can skew later polls because we are pretty good at that .. The Republicans have caught on, so they are getting theirs out earlier too this round I have heard.. but its just an interesting dynamic..

(19,348 posts)May I ask what county you live in and how "red' is it?
Peacetrain
(22,878 posts)Steve King is my representative.. It just does not get any redder..Iowa is a very interesting state.. it has areas that are the bluest of blues..and areas reddest of reds..

(22,878 posts)You know we are very good at getting our people out early..but as I was telling someone else the republicans are pushing their people out early also.. this is going to be interesting

(2,062 posts)Good Luck, but complacency will turn the Senate and Mr. Obama's veto pen will run out of ink several times. The only good news out of a Senate change may be if the right does attempt to go totally over the top, it may just piss enough people off the in 2016 the Senate may swing back. On the Maher show this week, Alexandra Pelosi had a video showing just how uniformed the American voter really is. Sad, but true, we are seeing an end to an era, when GOP like the Eisenhower time is totally gone, and the right - wing conservative and ultra conservative part of the party is grabbing hold. Who can you blame, well I will blame every American that can vote that doesn't. I will blame every woman who say she is for equal treatment, but then doesn't vote. I will blame every minority who wants equal treatment, but then will not vote. I will blame every young person, who says they want a fair, just world, but will not vote. You can't blame the Kochs, or the politicians, because they, (whether we like it or not), are trying to get elected, and are doing what our supreme court said they can do. The GOP will take the Senate, and will fail to do what they want. They will not get 2/3 majority to override vetos, they will then act as if they never did this sort of stuff, and the Democrats will become the party of no (according to Fox News).
So good luck Iowa, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alaska, .... until you get a democrat as a candidate the will actually stand up for democrat views and visions, and show the uniformed American voter how the right wing is killing their hopes of a prosperous way of life, this is how we will need to live.....
