As much as the GOP would love to simply deny anyone Obama nominates, that means they're stuck with Holder as long as they don't confirm anyone. Sounds like the way any new retirement needs to be done.

who will run the show until an appointment is confirmed. If that were the case, Obama could appoint and nominate a really aggressive person who will be able to run the show until he or she is confirmed. He could also use his office to appoint someone when congress is not in session.

No need to nominate a deputy, Holder says he is staying on until a replacement is confirmed, which may be a long time.

Fortunately since Holder is staying on until the new AG is confirmed (much like Hillary Clinton did until John Kerry was confirmed).

Reid runs the Senate. It takes 51 votes to confirm. There could be a new AG tomorrow if Obama nominated someone and Reid asked for a vote on it. There are no filibusters allowed on cabinet appointments.
