The news last week that Obamacare had reached 7 million enrollees killed a number of conservatives' favorite memes against the law -- more people had lost coverage than gained it, nobody wanted to sign up for it at all, etc. But even with some of the law's best news in months, one attack was still going strong.
Obamacare is a raw deal -- a disaster, really -- for young Americans.
Young people propelled Obama to office, but have not seen any benefits from his agenda. The latest youth unemployment figures show how Obamas policies of higher taxes, increased regulations and, most importantly, ObamaCare have stunted Millennials economic opportunity," Raffi Williams, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said in a Friday statement. "I just wish Obama would get out of the way and allow my generation to chase our American Dream."
The truth, as is usually the case, is a bit more complicated.

(36,286 posts)My husband and I have always had employer supplied heath insurance. Before Obamacare, one of my children went without health insurance despite needing several medications. (She also went without the medications! ) Three of my other children have health insurance now because of Obamacare. I'm including the extension of coverage to age 26 in that.
I think the notion that young people don't buy insurance because they're spending their money on fast cars is greatly exaggerated. How many young people with money don't already have health insurance? How many are working low wage jobs with no insurance, or aren't working at all?

(45,491 posts)who want to appear to be rebelling against Obama by not getting insurance. Anyone of any age who can afford it but choosing to remain uninsured is its own punishment. Anyone with any sense at all will get at least a catastrophic plan, or more likely a high deductible with health savings account. Disaster happens when you are least prepared to deal with it. Driving fast and engaging in risky sports and other activities is something that can be one accident away from very expensive medical bills and debt.
Most everyone benefits from regular checkups and screenings. Young liberals would know this.
