Newt Gingrich: Hillary Clinton can’t be president because she doesn’t drive

“Here’s a woman whose effort to get back in touch with us doesn’t involve driving across America"

KATIE MCDONOUGH

New Gingrich believes Hillary Clinton should not be president because she no longer drives a car. Presidents famously do a lot of driving, so Gingrich has a point. (Just kidding, he does not have a point.)

Gingrich made the comment in an effort to frame Clinton as out of touch with regular people. Gingrich considers himself — a wealthy television host and many-times-over failed presidential candidate — one of these regular people.

“Here’s a woman whose effort to get back in touch with us doesn’t involve driving across America — or even driving to the grocery store,” he said on CNN Monday night. “It’s being chauffeured to the national auto dealers convention to tell them, quote, ‘I wish I could drive one of your cars’?”

After taking Clinton’s self-deprecating humor and turning it into some kind of indicator about her ability to lead, he accused her of “relating to foreigners” because she noted during her appearance at the National Auto Dealers Association that she understands how the rest of the world views the United States because of her time as Secretary of State.

Hillary Clinton Says She Hasn't Driven A Car Since 1996

CATHERINE THOMPSON – JANUARY 27, 2014, 12:37 PM EST

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday that she hasn't driven a car since 1996, the year her husband Bill Clinton was elected to a second term as president.

"I have to confess that one of the regrets I have about my public life is that I can't drive anymore. My husband thinks that's a blessing, but he's the one who should talk," Clinton joked at the National Auto Dealers Association convention in New Orleans. "Last time I actually drove a car myself was 1996, and I remember it very well. Unfortunately so does the Secret Service, which is why I haven't driven since then."

Clinton also reflected on her time at the head of the State Department in her remarks, singling out the 2012 attacks on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya as her biggest regret. On the other hand, she said her proudest moment as secretary of state was recommending that Navy SEALs carry out the raid that resulted in the death after Osama bin Laden.

And he'd make a damn fine PotUS. Better than gingrich anyway. Sorry, I just don't understand gingrich's point.
By his logic, I probably wouldn't be much of a PotUS because I'm fat and bald. Well, that makes as much sense as anything else. Good grief!

How did he manage to bounce back? I thought that after the last fiasco, he was out of politics altogether.

Does this mean we get to see his everlovin' by his side again? Does she still have the "all hair in place" look or has she switched to something approaching normal/natural?

I can hardly wait.

At this point they are throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks.

Rand mentions Monica Lewinsky
Newt mentions not driving
Everybody and their freaking brother mentions Benghazi

Public reaction outside of the RW echo chamber?

A big yawn.........

Early days... meaning early in USA history. Like Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison.

The Secret Service wouldn't want one of their charges driving. Hillary was first the First Lady, then campaigned for the Democratic nomination, then served as Secretary of State.

Her resume has a few more entries than Newtie's. Guess he's still jealous.

He had a car that had been modified to have all controls by the steering wheel. I don't know if he drove regularly, but he was able to drive if he chose to do so.

The SS driving ban for their protectees is relatively recent. I think that it came about after Kennedy's assassination, someone here might know.

Presidents can drive in confined areas if they want to do so. Reagan drove himself around his ranch. Ditto for Bush. Clinton liked to drive around Camp David. I don't recall where Hillary was when she was allowed to drive in 1996. What I do remember is that her driving skills must have been pretty rusty because she has joked ever since that she scared the SS and that's why she hasn't done any driving again. LOL!!

I'd imagine it would be difficult to adjust to having someone drive you everywhere. From the sounds of it, though, it may have been the best decision for Hillary!

1. She's blind as a bat, so maybe she shouldn't have been driving anyway.

2. She can't sing to save her life.

3. Her cooking skills only extend to making scramble eggs and being a sous chef (chopping and dicing). Chelsea can cook and Bill can manage a few dishes.

Amendment 666

In case of Rapture of the driver of the Presidential vehicle, a requirement for the office of President of the United States is the possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by one of the states or territories of the United States.

and think it would be a huge, enormous, gigunda mistake for the Dems to nominate her in 2016, her driving or not driving has nothing to do with whether or not she'd be a suitable President.

Personally, if I were using driving as a marker for suitability to the office, I'd only vote for someone who drives a stick shift. Luckily, that's not the kind of information normally available to me, a voter.
