His opponent? John Warner.

Warner did help set up a 3rd party independent candidate when Ollie North ran against Chuck Robb for Senate back in the 90's .
The independent candidate did manage to get enough votes from people who probably were GOP but couldn't stomach voting for North and ended up helping Robb win re-election.
