2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSorry Joe Manchin, But the Problem is the Republicans
If Manchin were right, and President Obamas personal relationships with lawmakers could lead to more responsible governing, a concerted effort could be made to turn the White House into The Friendliest Place on Earth.
Regrettably, though, Manchins remedy is deeply flawed.
Lets put aside, at least for now, the fact that Obama has gone further than any modern president in bringing members of the opposing party into his cabinet and incorporating ideas from the opposing partys agenda into his own policy plans only to find that Republicans oppose the very ideas they used to support once they learn the president agrees with them.

(31,849 posts)the "personal relationship" narrative (especially from folks like Manchin) is code for: "Stop being so uppity."
From my travels in W. VA., I have found that folks (over the age of 50) have a strong conception of how folks are to relate with one another ... Black folks are to be contrite; white folks can be differed to.
We cannot divorce a century and a half of racial relations/interaction from current relations/interactions.

(31,849 posts)what Mrs. 1SBM and I are experiencing. BabyGirl 1SBM is home from college and we are having to adjust to our "new" relationship with BabyGirl 1SBM.
For the past 18 years, we have known that BabyGirl 1SBM would differ to our positions on any number of subjects. Now, she is out of our house and pretty much self-sufficient (though we still pay her tuition, room and board, plus some spending money). So, while she accepts our counsel, she makes her own decisions and is doing her own thing.
That takes some adjusting to!

(3,747 posts)The fact that there is a black family in the WH still stings to this day. After all, whitey was supposed to rule for all time, in their minds at least. I myself, love our president, even when I totally disagree with him. Let's give him the ability to govern and we all might have our living standards raised.

(4,949 posts)Joe Manchin's statements & line of thinking is distorted & disgusting!
IMHO he is a DINO & should be replaced.
BlueToTheBone
(3,747 posts)the D by his name. He is definitely a DINO and I wish he'd leave so we could get on with being Democrats.

(32,086 posts)But, I also think he is just a Blue Dog bed-wetter. I honestly don't understand why this guy still calls himself a Democrat. He votes with the republicans more than he votes with his own party. And, as evidenced by this crap, he even goes so far as to parrot GOP talking points, such as this "personal relationship" garbage. (You'll remember that Dumbya never had any "personal relationships" with any Democrats, nor did his ratfuck party insist on it.) I think he's just more concerned about losing his job than he is making sure that his constituents understand that the other party has been feeding them a mountain of bullshit.

(24,414 posts)President Obama didn't declare total warfare on the Republican Party on day one and tried more than most Presidents to really be a true bipartisan President but the Republicans and to anybody saying that this is just "he said/she said" childhood bickering, there is evidence aplenty which party is more to blame for the state of gridlock/partisanship and it ain't the Democrats under President Obama. Whenever somebody spouts off about this, I wish that somebody would respond by asking what the Republicans are doing to build a "personal relationship" with President Obama. As any good relationship/marriage counselor will tell you, relationships are a two way street.

(8,515 posts)However how many times do we have to write about what is so obvious?
They want only one thing...to destroy Obamas Presidency..
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,414 posts)it's so obvious to us. Manchin is oblivious to it- or doesn't want to acknowledge it because he's afraid of losing his seat if he strays too far from the anti-Obama mood in his state. Likewise, most of the MSM and punditocracy is worried about looking "liberal", so they stick with the right-wing narrative as well and just blame everything on President Obama. Thankfully, he handles it well but he is a better man than I. I would've been sick of the Republican/MSM practically from day one.

(4,229 posts)I'm from WV and his spearheading gun control legislation will likely result in his removal by WV voters.
His popularity took a HUGE hit.
The sad part is he will likely be replaced by a more regressive republican whose policies will actually hurt most of WV whose people mostly are poor and reliant on gov't programs like medicaid and disability.
Manchin should know from his attempt with Manchin/Toomey that the GOP will not meet anybody even 1/3 of the way.
He makes no sense to me. I think he just does stuff to get in front of the camera.
For instance he was against increased involvement of the US with Syria which I agreed with. I mean why should we get involved in another war?? But he's for sanctions against Iran rather than letting diplomacy work which seems inconsistent but both are guaranteed to get the media talking about him.
I would argue he IS more democrat than republican, so will be sad to see him defeated when he comes up for re election. His problem is most of the democrats here don't like him anymore and although he plays to the conservatives most of them prefer a real wing nut.

(30,058 posts)in which we do not agree. This is the main problem facing our nation is the election of TP type and let's see how far right we can go and these extreme RWer's are being elected. The GOP does not have the true interest of the most of the population of this nation. I would ask you to rethink a vote against a Democrat in favor of a GOP member who works hard against citizens who want an opportunity to get ahead, a chance to be a middle class family.

(4,229 posts)I didn't mean I was going to vote for a republican over Manchin.
I meant that I live here and know a lot of people who are.
