Dick Cheney On Same-Sex Marriage Feud Between Daughters: Liz's 'Kindnesses' Shouldn't Distort Position
DANIEL STRAUSS NOVEMBER 18, 2013, 2:11 PM EST
Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife weighed in on the feuding between Wyoming Senate candidate Liz Cheney and Cheney's sister, Mary Cheney, over their disagreement on same-sex marriage.
The statement is the latest development in an ongoing and increasingly public feud among the Cheney family over same-sex marriage. Liz Cheney has repeatedly expressed her opposition to same-sex marriage despite the fact that Mary is a lesbian and in a committed relationship. Mary, in response, wrote on Facebook that her sister is dead wrong on the issue.
"This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it become public. Since it has, one thing should be clear. Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage," the vice president and his wife said in a statement on Monday according to The Hill. "She has also always treated her sister and her sister's family with love and respect, exactly as she should have done. Compassion is called for, even when there is disagreement about such a fundamental matter and Liz's many kindnesses shouldn't be used to distort her position."
After Liz Cheney reiterated her opposition to same-sex marriage during a televised appearance on Sunday Mary went on to Facebook to write was on the "wrong side of history." Mary Cheney later told the New York Times that she would not be seeing Liz Cheney at Christmas. The family is scheduled to gather in Jackson Hole, Wyoming to celebrate the holiday.

(14,337 posts)My older, married in NY, lesbian daughter is fully supported by her younger, straight, married sister. Hopefully, me and my husband had something to do with that in raising our children, unlike the politically motivated Republican Cheney's?

Liz used her sister to score political points with bigots. Nothing kind about that.

Good lord, she even lost Mom and Dad's vote. That is hard to do.
But who can forget that Mom and Dad kept Mary (and spouse) off the stage at the 2004 re-nominating convention?
