An early crisis, recalled the Bulletin, was the John Doe problem: Many employers reported earnings without providing a workers name or SSN [Social Security number]. The first report from the Bureau of Internal Revenue did not contain SSNs for about 12 percent of the wage itemsand this rapidly increased in subsequent reports.
Of course, in the media, nothing has changed much. The article says that Drew Pearson "stoked panic over the John Does." But...

(2,674 posts)Anyone remember back in the late 90's when Ebay first came out. At Christmas, they had mass failures because they could not handle the traffic, lots of unhappy customers. And the biggest crash of all was Etoys, that site was totally unprepared for the millions of people who wanted to buy toys.
Americans are so spoiled, can't wait for anything. I guess all the states that opted out are laughing, but in the long run, they will regret not getting on board when it stated.

Yes, Americans want everything right now and are outraged when their demands aren't met immediately.

(13,877 posts)iterations (is that the word?) we had to download, hard drives crashing, crappy phone service pretty much went "first, shut it down..." ah yes, the good old 90's.

(12,448 posts)I remember all too well the painful screech of the modem (sounded like a stuck pig), trying to connect over and over, getting cut off, etc. etc. etc.

(3,163 posts)...no one will remember this flub either. As with Social Security, the law will outlast the starting line stumble by many decades. Big deal. Let them scream, ignore them, and focus on something that matters.
