Kasich’s Medicaid expansion expected to pass Controlling Board

By Jim Siegel

The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday October 16, 2013 5:48 AM

Though no Republican on the board has announced that he will vote for it, Senate President Keith Faber said yesterday he expects Gov. John Kasich to win Controlling Board approval to spend what is needed to expand Medicaid.

“I don’t know that I necessarily would have been a fan of expanding Medicaid, but that’s not the question anymore,” Faber, R-Celina, said. “Now, the question is, how do we do Medicaid reforms that are going to make the system more efficient and more effective and provide coverage to more people for less money?”

Kasich will ask the seven-member spending oversight panel on Monday to approve spending $2.56 billion in federal money over two years for an expansion that will cover an estimated 275,000 low-income Ohioans. Two Democrats and a Kasich appointee on the board are expected to vote yes, but one of four legislative Republicans must join them for the spending proposal to pass.

And no medicaid expansion thus far. I wonder if we're the only one. Sad.

Montana is controlled by Republicans with a D- Governor Bullock. I don't think we can get a special session either.

Our R controlled house demanded a committee to study medicaid expansion. Now theres ONE repub holding the whole damn thing up. Pretty pathetic considering NH has over 400 house members.

Friggin supreme court really screwed us on this medicaid thing. Belated welcome to DU.

I do think NH will eventually expand it. The waiting is a killer when you need it. Of course they know that.

Let's see, if he wins (likely), whether he seriously tries. He's likely to still face a Republican House.

with county health programs. In Houston, Harris County has a program for low income residents called a "Gold Card". A single adult without children can have an income as high as $19K per year and still get $10 office visits, $50 ER visits and $8 prescriptions at any of the county clinics. Austin (Travis County) has a MAP card (Medical Assistance Program). My guess is that counties with their own health programs will try to apply for federal money directly.
