With Senate deal imminent, Boehner has a choice: His job or our economy

Get nervous: The fate of the country is in John Boehner’s hands

With a Senate deal imminent, the speaker has a choice to make: His job or our economy. He could go either way

BY BRIAN BEUTLER

Minding the caveat that fluid events are fluid and thus subject to flowing to unexpected places, it looks like Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell are a hair’s breadth from a deal to reopen the government and extend the debt limit for several months.

If they ink it today, they can probably pass it before Thursday, at which point the Treasury Department will run out of headroom under the debt limit and the country will be at the mercy of its lenders.

That raises a troubling question: What the hell happens in the House?

You may have noticed things over there aren’t exactly spinning like a top. And yet the fate of the country will soon be in the hands of its leaders. Is there any reason to believe the House won’t biff it?

I believe Boner has gotten 'an offer he couldn't refuse' from his corporate masters that would make Don Corleone blush.

I don't see how he can pull through this debacle and keep the speakership. No matter what he does the Tea Bagger crazies are going to want his head.

I think in the next day or so, we will see whether Boenher has any humanity in him. He will either choose his cushy job and doom people the world over to economic collapse or he will admit that this whole situation is bigger than himself and let the House vote.

Call me a fool but I think he will choose the latter. I think the risk of unmitigated hardship for people all over the planet will outweigh him keeping his fancy title. I think he is evil but I don't think he is so evil that he will doom us all over his ego.

If we end up having a deal that is backed by the white house, the democrats in the senate, the republicans in the senate, and the democrats in the house and yet the house republicans won't allow a vote. We would end up with a worldwide economic collapse because a few members of one political party are too stubborn.
