2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Speech the Republicans Wouldn't Let You Hear
Ten days ago, the Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives shut down the federal government.
Two days ago, a pollster identified things that now are more popular than Congress. Here are some of them: Dog poop. Zombies. Witches. Hemorrhoids.
Yesterday, another pollster measured the GOP approval rating. Answer: 28%. No major political party has ever seen an approval rating this low.
I took to the House Floor to tell the Republicans exactly what you think of Congress. I pointed out that according to scientific polling, Americans think more of dog poop than Congress. And the Speaker of the House wouldn't let me finish.
You heard that right. When I carried your voice into Congress, the Republicans tried to shut me up. First they shut down the government. Now, they're telling America to shut up.
Despite their attempt to silence us, my speech was all over the media - from the Daily Show, to MSNBC's All In With Chris Hayes, to the Huffington Post, to Raw Story, to Gawker. Even right-wing propaganda organs like The Blaze and Weasel Zippers covered it. And now the polls are showing the Republicans might lose their majority in the U.S. House in next year's election.
Let's show them that when they shut down the government, we take back the House.
The GOP now knows that they're in trouble, and only their sewer money can save them. This means that every dollar we raise scares the GOP, and makes it more likely that they will fold on the government shutdown.
With every dollar, with every contribution that you make, I am going to work to take the House back for the Democrats. And I know I can count on you. Because I'm just saying what you're thinking. Which is that Congress shouldn't be less popular than dog poop.
Let's do this together.
Courage,
Alan Grayson

(276 posts)I watched your speech and loved it and if I followed it correctly you were trying to use the house rules to bring up the Senate bill that reopens the government. Thanks for trying! Now if you could just take over Yoho's district because he is unfortunately my congress non-representative. I am so embarrassed. please help us get rid of him in 2014. I am more than willing to go door to door!

(10,559 posts)I actually had seen the speech excerpt earlier this week, and did an "oh, I'll share that with my husband" before getting annoyed because all the links are fundraising.
Grrr...

(10,559 posts)I saw excerpts of the speech, and loved it. I was proud of you.
But I think it is inappropriate to come here, imply you are linking to the speech or other useful information, and put half a dozen links instead to your donation page.
It is scammy. One link - clearly labeled - would be no big deal and if you did two I would sigh, but get over it.
You put in NINE. It makes it feel less like information sharing, and more about fundraising.
Please don't do that here like that.

Mr Grayson you have the will of a lion - and are not afraid of talking to the "Power to be" even if it means you will get some heat for doing so.. A man with corrouage in other ways... And it is something that US really need this days - men and women who is not afraid of talking truth to the powers - because a default would not just hurt US, but also rest of the world...
I just with mr Grayson - it existed a few more like you in the House of Representatives in the US congress - if it had - it might not been able for the Republican party - and specially the Tea Party representatives to do as they will - held a whole nation as hostages..
What the Tea Party representatives - and enough of the ordinary GOP reps are doing now - is just criminal - and they should be punished for it - after the next elections it must be a inquiry into them - and to put them on trial for criminal neglect of their Duty for the Country...
I hope the "good guys" in the end will win this Chess game and that it would not end in a Default.. But I'm not so sure anymore - If you had asked me 14 year ago if the Congress would be a madhouse in a few years I would say NO... After the election of President Bush - and the madness who was made into the "normal" then - And specially the outright hatred to the current President Barack H. Obama I would say - I am not sure anymore.. It looks like the madmen have occupied the House of Reps - and they have no interest in building a just society for everyone - they are ready to burn the whole thing down... And they would in fact enjoy if it happend...
Mr Grayson, you and the "sane" people in the House of Representatives have your job cut out for you - but I do hope it is possible to repair the damage the Tea Party and the current leadership of GOP have being doing to the US for the last 15-20 years..
And this is from one, who live on the outside of the US, and is looking in, to the madness who is the US today..

Non sibi sed patriae is a Latin phrase meaning "Not for self, but for country". The phrase is inscribed over the chapel doors at the United States Naval Academy and some war memorials.

(24,764 posts)The Tea Party is trying actively to overthrow constitutional democracy and their antics in the House proves it. Coup attempts are by definition seditious and if this isn't sedition, what is?
Calling them out on their seditious conduct is guaranteed to provoke a well-deserved, collective meltdown on the part of House Republicans right on the House floor.
