WASHINGTON -- Negotiations ran late into the night at the White House, as House Republicans made their latest offer in their standoff with President Obama -- a proposal to reopen the government and raise the nations debt limit if the president agreed to further talks, officials said Friday.
In their offer, the House Republicans proposed launching a two-track negotiation over at least the next six weeks, the officials said.

On the second track, House Republicans would reopen government if the White House agreed to talks on the more immediate budget spending levels for the 2014 fiscal year, which is already underway. Both parties would like to shift the next round of across-the-board cut, the so-called sequester, coming on Jan. 1.
Republicans are still insisting on some concession -- the substance of which is still under discussion but possibly slight changes to the new healthcare law, which Democrats have resisted -- as a condition to reopening government.

The debt ceiling must be raised by an amount sufficient to ensure it is the next Congress which must vote to raise it, and the continuing resolution must be for the full fiscal year --- neither can have any condition attached.

(24,412 posts)Doing their jobs isn't a "concession" on their part- and should not be used to demand ANYTHING. *ugh* And what the hell kind of "changes" do they want to make to the health care law that are going to make it better? They don't want to make it better. They all still want to kill it. I think that they are figuring out that now maybe the best way to do it is death by a thousand cuts. And what's to stop them from causing more showdowns over the debt ceiling and government funding so they can now try whittling away at the law? NO DEAL!
