It Takes Just 10 Sentences For Obama to Obliterate Republicans on the Debt Ceiling

It Takes Just 10 Sentences For Obama to Obliterate Republicans on the Debt Ceiling

The Republican argument for not raising the debt ceiling is so weak that President Obama destroyed it in 10 sentences during his press conference today.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I mean, think about it. The only reason that the Republicans have held out on negotiations up until the last week or so is because they thought it was a big enough deal that they would force unilateral concessions out of Democrats and out of me. They said so. They basically said, you know what? The president’s so responsible that if we just hold our breath and say we’re going to threaten default, then he’ll give us what we want, and we won’t have to give anything in return. That’s not — again, that’s not my account of the situation. You can read statements from Republicans over the last several months who said this explicitly.

And — and so for them now to say, well, it wouldn’t be a big deal if it — if it happens — that’s now how they’ve been acting over the last couple of months. And if it’s not a big deal, then why would I give them concessions now to avoid it? It is a big deal. And nobody should be getting concessions for making sure that the full faith and credit of the United States is retained.

The president summed up the contradiction that is at the heart of the Republican position. How can Republicans expect Obama to give them unilateral concessions when they are also arguing that the debt ceiling is no big deal? If the debt ceiling really wasn’t a big deal, why would Republicans expect the president to give them anything? Much like everything else surrounding the Republican argument, this makes no sense.

I'll have to chase it down later tonight, I understand he named names and took no prisoners.

Even Republicans are starting to notice it's their own damned party, or a bunch of yahoos in it, who are doing this to us.

to explain the debt ceiling. We all know we can't borrow money and then refuse to pay. Well, most of us know that.

If Obama does nothing and calamity strikes, they will say "He could have fixed this by himself and yet he did nothing!". If Obama invokes the 14th Amendment or uses some other strategy to get around a vote, the Repubs will scream "He did something illegal! Impeach!"

I personally think and hope he does invoke the 14th. Let's see what the SCOTUS does then, with the threat of global economic depression hanging over their heads.

First, it would be tried for the first time in a crisis situation that we have never been in. second the reaction of the markets would be critical to economic survival and who knows if they would respond positively to a move that would signal that the government had essentially ceased to function. Of course we are already close to that. Very frightening situation.

What I wish that Obama would talk about is the constitutional crisis that we are in right now where part of congress is refusing to carry out their constitutional duties to uphold the law of the land and to make sure the government is funded.

I thought the election of 2000 was a coup. Now I am sure of it.

flawed. Because they try to cover both sides, they self-contradict all the time.

When lying is the main mode of communication from the GOP, it's no wonder that, more often than not, they will say a lie that will contradict a previous lie they had stated before.

Honesty prevents contradictions.

President Obama should tell the republicans that he would repeal Obamacare and replace it with the Affordable Care Act.

The News Media, after the speech, only puts excerpts and not the whole speech. Most people will only see the excerpts.
