And in 2006, the voters sent 'em packing in blowout losses - giving Dems control of the Senate & House.

It can happen again.

Cooch and his running mate are beyond bad, they are RW extremists. I hope that voters in VA realize just how bad thoe two would be for their state.

1. E.W. Jackson, who's certifiable, for Lt. Governor.
2. Mark Obenshain, who put in legislation to criminalize miscarriages (!), and who also opposes contraception and abortion in all cases, for Attorney General.

The horror. The horror.

Living on the NC line, I've noticed that crooked politicians are a recurring story in both parties in NC, whereas VA has taken pride in being a clean government state with less corruption than its neighbors. So what McDonnell has done is far more damaging that if, say, the Kaine or Warner administrations had ever had a scandal. No Republican or Democratic governor has ever been accused of financial improprieties in my lifetime, as far as I recall.

So McAuliffe has seemed destined to win by 5 points for some time, but the shutdown may well double his lead, if this pattern holds. It's not just in NoVa that the outrage is felt-- Hampton Roads is quite impacted as well as evidenced by Rigell being a vocal opponent of the shutdown along with three other VA Republican congressmen.

Perhaps we can redraw a few of those outrageous gerrymandered tea-bag districts. I know it's mid-decade, but hey, Texas did it in 2003!

Right now, Republicans control the Virginia House of Delegates 68-32, even though Virginia is a "purple" state that has 2 Democratic U.S. Senators, a 20-20 State Senate, voted for Barack Obama twice, etc. Why? Two factors: 1) gerrymandering by Republicans; 2) a big money advantage for Republicans. Even if we can't do anything about #1 before 2021, wealthy donors (and lots of grassroots donors) could make a big difference on #2. So where are they?
