TOM KLUDT OCTOBER 3, 2013, 7:21 AM EDT
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took heat from his Republican colleagues Wednesday in a closed-door meeting to discuss the government shutdown, Politico reported.
At the meeting that was hosted by the Senates conservative Steering Committee, according to the report, one GOP senator after another pressed Cruz to offer a proposal to end the shutdown. The junior senator from Texas reportedly had no solution nor could he explain how he would defund the Affordable Care Act an effort led by Cruz and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) that served as the impetus for the current shutdown.
At one point in the meeting, Republicans pressed Cruz to tell them what he would have done had the party united behind his call to filibuster a House-passed continuing resolution to keep the defunding hopes alives. Only 19 Republicans backed Cruz's attempt to block the bill.
He kept trying to change the subject because he never could answer the question, an unnamed senator told Politico. Its pretty evident its never been about a strategy its been about him. Thats unfortunate. I think hes done our country a major disservice. I think hes done Republicans a major disservice."

(212 posts)Safe to say that Senator Cruz has already lost the "Who would you rather have a beer with?" contest?

(26,060 posts)thinks that's the issue. He doesn't care if Congress doesn't work, he's got his sights on the White House.

(81 posts)OH my goodness An important sober read - "Ted's father, Rafael Cruz, is a pastor with Texas charismatic ministry Purifying Fire International who has been campaigning against Obamacare the last several months. He has a distinct theological vision for what America is supposed to look like: Christian dominionism." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/morgan-guyton/the-theology-of-governmen_b_4020537.html

(15,220 posts)It's really indicative of just how screwed up the Republican party is. They can't get control of their own.
The senior senators need to do more than give ole Teddy a "talking to". They need to get tough with him and get his antics under control.
No way to do that, you may ask? I call b/s. It's been happening for centuries. It's all about scratching each other's backs, etc., etc. The "more normal" Republicans (if there are any) need to put enough pressure on this idiot to shut him up and get the government back to work.
Teddy's tantrum has lasted long enough and ordinary, working class Americans are paying for his grandstanding.
