5. With 36 states in the national exchange

including some of the reddest ones, we may be closer to a national system than we think.

One of the big problems has been that insurance companies were able to form a cartel, effectively dividing up territories -- just like the Mafia. "You can have the west coast, and I'll take the great plains." The exchanges have essentially bypassed state insurance commissioners and established national standards for policies. And the pricing is completely transparent -- none of that back-room car salesman crap. So there really is no reason for an insurance company to not compete in all 50 states because the other 14 states are bound by the same rules and transparency.

This leaves us with 15% overhead, by law, compared to about 3% overhead with Medicare. The nation can survive with that spread. What we have to avoid is what happened in the telecomm industry where the companies consolidated down to about 3 huge players. That is the next challenge.

If there are areas where anti-competitive practices start to develop, there is always the chance that a Medicare buy-in option could be added to the exchanges. Politically that cannot work today, but getting the exchanges in place can make this a very viable threat for the future. We need the FTC to aggressively fight any industry consolidation, and we need politicians who are willing to hold out the threat of a Medicare buy-in if the industry starts misbehaving again.

She is being bled dry paying $325 a month and with a high deductible. Under Obamacare, she will pay around $100. Yeah!

Granted, I live in Arizona and things are a little up in the air, at the moment, but if all goes well I'm between $100-$150 a month!

After being told 4 years ago that the only way I could be insured was to pay over 40% of my paycheck plus sign a rider that excluded me from almost any type of treatment for any type of health issue...I'm scared to death. I haven't had insurance in 12 years. I've only been to the doctor twice, for emergencies. I kinda don't wanna know what's wrong with me. But, there is this unfamiliar hope that I could possibly have some good years ahead.

I'm still terrified, but it's balanced out a bit.

Even without having any clue what you make. But to sign a rider excluding you from almost any type of treatment for any type of health issue? Why bother? Save the money and consider your own personal end-of-life plan.

Jeez. I sincerely hope the new system goes very well for you.

Give up. Which I did. Our company only has 4 employees so it wasn't really a 'group' policy. They had to accept me, but they could initiate their own requirements. My health history is interesting enough that they decided to make it very undesirable for me to sign up.

ACA will be great for me. No preexistings and they can't charge me an absurd amount. I'm still scared to death, though.

Even at whatever the lowest level of policy is (Bronze?) you'll have coverage. And no pre-existing condition bullshit.

Keep on reading what nice things have been posted here on DU, as well as elsewhere, and just in case you need this reminder, don't watch Fox News or read any Republican crap.

I haven't seen a doctor for over 12 years, except twice for emergencies. Because of my health history, I'm terrified to hear what they'll find.

The only time I watch FOX is when someone here or another D site links to it.

coverage IF--and God forbid--there's something wrong healthwise. But, let's not worry about that. Let's be positive. There's nothing wrong with you.

But, get to that doctor and have your check-up. It's very important now that you'll have coverage. The time for practicing preventive care is now.

Good luck, my friend.

Actually, as terrified as I am, I'm really excited for so many others. There are people out there with fixable health issues that will get the care they need. I'm tired of hearing about young people dying from things that are treatable.

A funny thing happened about an hour ago. I told my boss (a self-proclaimed Libertarian, but really just a moderate Conservative) that my rates should be between $100-$150. He said, "Mine only came up as $50. Why would mine be cheaper than yours?"

2 months ago he thought this was the worst possible thing in the world. Now, he's bragging that his will be a whole $50-$100 cheaper.

some information to some people I know so they can do the same. There's still a great deal of misinformation out there.

and worked my way down to this calculator:

http://www.nystateofhealth.ny.gov/PremiumEstimator

The site is still aimed at covering the period bt October 1 and December 31, so if there is info there regarding what's in a Bronze, silver, gold and platinum policy, I missed it.
